Little Bear Tube Phono Pre??

6N2P-EV - TRIO VOSKHOD DOUBLE TRIODES, 1970, NOS...I think these quieted things down the most. I think I sense a little more harshness but thinking it will smooth out after some break in. My power amp picks up very subtle changes in the mid range.

The one 6Z4 cannot be matched with non Chinese [so it seems]. I picked up some Beijing Military 6Z4 -Q Rectifiers on eBay...supposedly an upgrade to the new versions. Will see ;)

I like that cartridge loading trick! Maybe run those two resistors to a little mini DPST switch and be able to switch the 'loading' in or out depending on cart used? Hey Sled,

Yup! Arrived yesterday! Spent last night doing the 'assembly'. After I completed mine I noted a picture of one where the leads were twisted or braided.....which I did NOT do when I assembled it. Rather, I simply shortened them...which I hope doesn't cause a problem. I also replaced the four .47 caps , previously graciously provided by Peter (ScaleAutoArt) .... thank you very much! l have yet to get the remaining two caps, and I've not done anything else to it. I'm searching for a suitable 'box' for it, or perhaps I should re-phrase that as a 'pan'. I'm thinking maybe a tin cake pan might do the trick....lol. Anyway....not yet plugged it in. Thinking maybe I should also invest in some better tube? Any suggestions there would be appreciated. I'll post an update most likely this weekend when I finally get some time to actually give it a try!

Just ordered the caps...... Ordered 4 and will match the best 2 for installation.

Regarding that 'whole nother story'.... (is 'nother' a word?...lol) Do you have a recommendation for tubes? I'm not so sure I like the look of those that it comes with....let alone having not yet heard them. I'd just as soon get something else now!

Well, for Starts you can Use 6N2P-EVs in It...Using (3) of them might make it a Bit Harsh...You can Also use 6DJ8s...I'd say, if you Must, get some of the EVs just to put them in It were they Work Best...But, the Ones that Come with It, Sound Pretty Good...

I'll try to check those voltages tomorrow. I seem to recall that earlier in this thread there are some instructing for 'correcting' those voltages if necessary. Hopefully I won't have to do that. I have some 6DJ8s here.....so may flip a few around when I get that far. Thanks Sled! Tom D.
 
Oh, just Run it with Stock Tubes first...They have More Gain than the 6DJ8s...Like I said, it's a whole 'Nother' Story...

So I did replace all 3 and at first it was a little harsh but once everything broke in [caps and all] it seemed to smooth out. I will see if anything changes switching them out as you did but so far it's settling in nicely with the rest of my gear.
 
Just a confirmation that [in my case] replacing all 3 with the Russian 6N2P-EVs sounds best. The initial harshness dissipated and overall they are much better then the Chinese originals.
 
Hmmm...6N2P's? Well, they're not EVs...But it seems that I have a Bit of Rolling to do...

Much as I wish I'd had time to get to my LB..... unfortunately this weekend just didn't provide the opportunity! However, hopefully this week will be different. I've ordered the .1 Russian PIO caps.....and kinda waiting for them to arrive. Would love to come up with a few of those 6N2Ps. I may have this unit completely 'upgraded' prior to ever plugging it in!
 
I changed the power cord, big difference. Any will do, nothing fancy, I used one from an old printer (I think). I got 4 EV tubes, (to have a spare),6 PIO caps, and diodes. A total investment of about $35.00. Hum is now under control.
I have this in a second system in my living room, consisting of a Denon DP-47/m97xe w/jico, Vincent Pre, Emotiva UPA-1 monoblocks and my JBL L200B/300 clones.
I don't have any high dollar phono pre's to compare, but it sounds significantly better than a Nano and a V-LPS in the same system. I know my gear is mid-fi at best, but that's the reason you'd buy this thing in the first place. It's affordable, looks cool, and it's been fun messing with it. For an investment of less than $150.00, I couldn't be happier.

Yes...some simple tweaks and it shines. I am currently in the budget realm of my setup with lots of DIY, well mostly the speakers. With some effort one can make a budget system sound pretty impressive. This was one of those crap shoots but panned out to be a nice change from the ART DJ. Being spoiled and all :music:

I did make some significant upgrades to the Pro-Ject Genie so all in all I have no major complaints. But TTs are something I like to change out as deals come along.
