I have a longwire antenna in my attic for AM and shortwave. The connection coming into my house is coaxial cable. What kind of adapter do I need to plug this into the back of my AVR?

What is the fitting on the terminus of the coax? Is it an F connector (typical TV/cable video connector), a PL-259 (amateur/CB radio connector) or...?
I know what I'd do, FWIW.
If the former (i.e., an F-connector), I'd get a (short) piece of coax with an F connector on it, cut and strip back the other end of the coax in the traditonal way one preps it to install a connector, twist up the braid, and connect the center conductor to the "hot" AM terminal and the braid (shield) to the geound terminal for the AM antenna.
Sort of like the above photo, but strip it back further (maybe an inch and a half), then, instead of folding back the braid, twiddle it up into the form of a "wire" (you may need to cut a few strands. I would tin the twisted up ground connector, and - of course - you need to make it thin enough to fit into the (small) hole for a wire in the GND terminal on the AVR (see next post below).
EDIT: here's a slightly more apropos photo!
The other end has an F connector on it and you can connect it to your F connector-terminated antenna downlead using an F connector union (female/female)

I am assuming you have something like these spring-loaded connectors on the back of your AVR for an AM antenna?

Sorry- forgot that I posted this. Yes- this is for AM. Correction.. the longwire is just one single shielded wire and my AVR has the 2 wire spring clips like the photo above. Previously I just had speaker wire connected to those terminals. Could I just use a wire nut and connect one or both of the speaker wires to the long wire?

the single lead AM antenna goes in the top connector. the other should theoretically go to a ground, like the center screw on a wall socket. that does not add to the reception so I wouldn't worry about it.
