Is the tuner section of the R-117 the same as a T-117, if so they are very highly thought of.

way to go, glad somebody here could grab it. dont see how anyone could go wrong, $310 to your door, seller has 100% feedback. i paid $260 for mine without the remote, and this one is cleaner than mine too, and i think mine was a real good buy.

all my deals fell though for the type of luxman that dingus has, then I stumbled across "the Carver Reciever" for $250 .. but would have gladly gotten a Lux

How to you like your Carver?? I love mine!!!!

There are two on there now, one with a surround processor. Very happy with my R-117 that I picked up last week. Anyone by chance have a copy of the manual?

Soundoc -- I paid extra for the manual and the remote. I'll give you a copy of the Manual when mine arrives.

Give us a review of yours! How does it sound?

I replaced a R-115 which was in my BR system. Speakers are B&W Matrix 805s and the sources are a Luxman PD-264 TT/Shure X97e and a Denon DCD-3520.
Honestly, I don't notice a big difference with the R-117. They both sound quite good with both the cdp or TT. Previously I had tried a Pioneer SX-828 and a Sherwood S-7900. Either Lux betters both in this set up by quite a bit. In as much as I prefer the esthetics and build quality of the 70's gear the "black box" Luxman just sounds cleaner with less grain. While not really comparable to my main tubed system, it is nonetheless quite enjoyable and has no glaring weakness to speak of. It is truly the finest SS sound that I have achieved so far. Either Lux comes highly recommended. I did briefly pair the R-117 with my DQ-10s and they had no problem whatsoever with these inefficient beasts. Must say though that I am truly ecstatic over my new Lux MB-3045s tubed mono blocks and the DQs. My fear that the bass would be weak was unfounded as biamping utilizing the DQ-LP1 electronic filter with a DQ-W1 bass module provides a seamless and solid low end.

I am really getting into Luxman now. Their TOTL stuff was very much ahead of the crowd, and the prices though relatively higher than Pioneer or Sansui, I believe represent a decent value considering how good the gear performs by today's standards. I think you will really like the R-117. Your Denon DCD-1520 will also look very good under it!

Thanks also for the manual offer, feel free to PM me.

I owned a Luxman R-117 when it was new. . . IIRC I bought it from Melton's in Atlanta. . . Nice receiver . . . Only owned it briefly as those were my "Seperates" days and I couldnt have a "Lowly Receiver". . . hind sight is 20/20. . . wish I had it today. . .

Well, this unit arrived yesterday...PACKED IN CRUMPLED NEWSPAPER despite my request not to do so. However, fortunately, there was no visible damage. However, when I turned it on, everything sounded SERIOUSLY distorted. It's at my Tech's now being evaluated. I have put the Seller on notice of the problem. We'll see what happens. Stay tuned.......

"PACKED IN CRUMPLED NEWSPAPER"
just incredible. what are they thinking? I suspect they can think just fine, they just don't care. bastards

crap, sorry to hear that! hopefully it will be like mine, or something equally easy to remedy. had fairly serious distortion from the left channel, always when adjusting volume or bass, and somtimes for no apparent reason. it would usually stabilize quickly by tapping the volume knob. soon after i found AK and discovered the wonders of DeOxit. one cleaning and my R-117 has performed flawlessly since. i also lucked out with my seller. he stayed in touch, always replied to my emails and backed the unit offering a full refund.

good grief, if i had any reservations on this i wouldnt have posted it. is there any chance that this could have been damaged during shipping?

that's the 2nd unit I have read about in AK today that might need impossible to find parts, the other was a SX-1280 that needs a no longer available IC for the FM. I'm thinking real hard at parts problems, and one of the units that is looking better all the time is the Marantz model 19 receiver, from the standpoint of having no ICs at all. The only problem with the 19 is the tube for the tuner.

Seller appears to me a nice guy as he offered me a free copy of the manual. I PPed him five bucks anyway as a small token of thanks.

I wish I could remember the source or the techs name, but there's supposed to be a guy in N Hollywood or perhaps the Valley who is an expert with old Luxman. I do recall he is of Japanese ancestry and I know I read about him while scouring all the Luxman info available on the net a while back. Sorry, I am not able to be more specific.

I just heard back from the Seller and this is what he had to say:

Send it back to ***********************. Please put insurance on it for $500 for me in case UPS breaks the box when you send it to me. It did work fine before it was shipped. I have been doing business on ebay for a number of years now and always use bubble wrap. I ran out of bubble wrap and used paper on this one. Boy was that a mistake. I understand electronics can break, however it was double boxed with styrofoam around the reciever. That should have been enough but hey life is short send it back and I will take care of you. Again I am very sorry for the reciever.

what was the final verdict from your tech?

seller has 100% feedback, whats your feeling on the possibility of him having you insure it, knowing the unit was DOA when he sent it to you, and filing a shipping claim? not very well thought out if that is the case. the insurer would have to file the claim, and would receive any compensation from the shipping company. also, if he feels that it was damaged in shipment, why doesnt he file a claim now?

My Tech told me that the microprocessor that controls the switching functions is failing causing "severe" distortion. It is not a shipping damage issue. It is an age issue. Once it's gone, it's gone. The part is not available and the only way to repair it is with a part from another one. My Tech set "you should get a refund on this one....it's $#^%ed!"

Anyway, I hope that Seller doesn't try to do something stupid like filing a damage claim on a unit he packed in newpaper!! :lmao:
