M91ED or M97XE

My M91 is one of my all time favorites, right with my M75's which for all intents and purposes is the same cartridge with different plastic. Perhaps he could search for one of them-might be more available, especially in the Radio Shack disguise.

The potential problem with the M75ED is the only available generic (ie: cheap) stylus tracks at 2 grams. The EVG stylus for the M91ED tracks at 1.25 grams, and presumably is more refined. Of course, if you have a NOS Shure stylus or are planning to jump right into an SAS, the point is moot.

That seems to be true, but there are numerous threads about trimming the plastic to make the styli interchangeable. I have an EVG stylus in an M75 at 2gm and it sounds virtually indistinguishable from my M91 at 1.5gm. The advantage of the M91 is that it will accept a stylus from an M75 as well as an M95 if you shim the sides a little to snug it up.

Yes, it's a bit soft on top, but not exactly rolled off. Smooth without being at all dull.

For me, it's not so much that it's rolled off, but that horns - alto and tenor sax for instance - become pinched. It could be the original large Advents I'm currently using. And/or it could also be that I have an Ortofon 2M Black that is not in use right now that really opens things up on the top end.

I dunno, man... I listen to a LOT of jazz, and the M91ED reproduces horns (especially tenor sax) with a nice rich fullness that I totally dig. It sounds to me like a synergy issue, or maybe your speakers need the crossovers recapped.

Believe me, I am not dissing the Shure M91ED. There can truly be a thrilling quality to the sound. I do think I am having issues with the Advents, and have said something to that effect. I am just reporting what I am hearing. The AR XB is also a very musical sounding table. I think you might be right about the crossovers. Sony6060 who restored my Fisher 800B also thinks that could be a problem. Interestingly, on another thread, someone weighed in and said that the OLAs were voiced for SS. Maybe that has something to do with things as well.

The M91s are about the only cartridge where the generic styli can stand up to the OEM. I'm a big fan of the Japan-made Pfanstiehl 4762-DE (designated for the M93 but fits the 91 just fine). HUGE sound. There was a while where Parts Express had them for $8, which was a steal. Still a great deal at < $20.

If the Advents have never been re-capped, they are long overdue for servicing.

The thing is, I know I bought them off a guy on ebay, who also has been on the forum here, and I know he knows his stuff. They were recapped, I'm pretty sure. I'm new to all of the technical stuff, so even if I opened them up, I don't know if I'd be able to tell if they were recapped, unless everything really looked new. But the guy knows his stuff, and in all of his listings, he sells them as good to go for the next 20 years. Maybe he didn't use stellar stuff, but I know there was work done on them.

Edit: Sorry for the overuse of the word, "stuff"!!

It'll end up being a personal decision, but I much prefer the 91ED. Big bold sound, great tracker. The 97xE just didn't do it for me. Just not enough body, and not enough soul. That said, there are a lot of folks who really like it.

What is the turntable that your friend is going to use the cart on?
Have (8) M91ED and (1) M97XE (Technics SL-1200MK2)....still trying to like the M97XE.

I have used the M91ED on PL-630, Thorens 145, 160, Dual 1019, 1229 and Technics SL-1200MK2

The M91ED has More Soul.

The original Advents are best done as per the econowaveguide thread in the speaker forum. The superb midwoofers are wasted with the outdated outclassed OEM tweeter and crossover.

With so much love out here for the M91ED, I wonder if Shure would ever consider bringing it back into production in place of the M97XE? Probably not much of a business model for it, but it would be interesting.

I think it would sell. They might be able to get something close but I doubt they could make it sound the same unless they had the exact same tooling and parts from the 70's.

How about M97HE ? Yes, "H". I use it with Advent Maestro and Technics 1210 M5G.
Very sweet to my ears. I only ran it against Denon DL-110 and HE won.
Could it be that xE is cost cutting version of HE ?

They probably made them by the tens of thousands and there are more than enough to satisfy any modern demand.

That's kinda what I was thinking, but there are some that would rather buy things new and not used. But overall I'm sure the demand is probably not enough to justify the effort on their part. If it was, they would probably already be making them. Even though LP sales are growing, they are a fraction of what they were in their heyday back in the late '70's. They may go up a little more, but I doubt if they will ever be anything more than a niche market going forward. I'm glad that the M91ED cartridge bodies don't generally wear out, and that someone (JICO) cares to make good quality styli for them. That way we can continue to enjoy them for many years to come.

First off, like Treker I have not heard the M97xe...

That said, the M91ED is fantastic. I recently gave away a Technics deck with my only M91ED cart and I've been kicking myself ever since.

Bold and soulful are two words already used to describe it that are very accurate to me.

I had recently replaced the stylus with a generic version, and even at that it was my favorite combo, over an Ortofon or other Shure carts.

I was wondering about that too. I haven't heard a cart and stylus combo that seems to reproduce horns as nicely as the M91ED on my system.

Still, different strokes...
