Mach One 4024, 4024A, 4029 Information and Upgrades!

Woofer Questions?

So does this mean, at first look, that the 4029, is a Superior unit to the 4024a?
Sniff, Sniff....

No, not at all. It might mean what most of us already knew by the specs listed, that the 4029 was built to play louder and handle more power. That is what it looks like on the surface. However, this may not be true, the 4024a woofer may play as loud and handle as much power as well. Once I rebuild the unit and do the electrical testing and VC temp under a given load we will know for sure.

Interesting differences in the woofers. In some ways, the technology of the 4024A would seem to have advantages and in others, the 4029 but in the end, maybe the tradeoffs translate to essentially equal performance.

Yes, you may be right on! Once I have them fixed, the 4024a from a buckled cone, I plan on doing the full testing. This has really got me interested in the 4024 but I don't have one to test. Also, I will post pictures and graphs when completed!

More 4024a Info

I have attached some pictures to show the flat wound voice coil wire as well as the coated foam surround and brass voice coil of the 4024a woofer!

Accoustical and electrical test info to come soon!:thmbsp:

4024a and lpad wiring?

This is a great topic! I got some mach ones a few weeks ago and just replaced all the caps on them with polyprop. Although probably not necessary, i swapped out the resistors with new ones too. I have the 4024A model, with veneered bottoms. I bypassed the lpad to the tweeters, but left the mid horn lpads because the midrange is much louder and needs the attenuation. A question though - i saw someone mentioned the tweeter is reverse polarity at the lpad on one model... is this the case with mine? what is the proper lpad wiring with the 4024a? i may need to hook the tweeter lpad back up. the lpads were pretty bad on mine, so i got the heavy duty replacements from parts express. the tweet volume seems fine without lpad attenuation in relation to the midhorn. i like to coax out all the sparkle i can from the tweeter. thanks for the input! i look forward to the new updates

If you know how your L-apd was wired, you follow the wire that is on the red colored terminal of the tweeter. It should be going to pin two of the L-pad if it is wired in phase. The 4029 model sends this wire to pin 3, which is ground. Therefore the tweeters on the 4029 are running in reverse phase in stock format. I think you will find the same on the 4024a model as well.

4024a and lpad wiring?

thanks - its been a few weeks since i opened up the l-pad section of my speakers, so dont recall exactly how its wired. i did draw a diagram, but i may have tossed it out accidentally. ill try reversing polarity and see how it sounds...to bypass the tweeter lpad, i just connected the positive and neg leads coming from the crossover to the regular polarities on the tweeter. ill double check. have u tried listening both ways to compare? thanks again

I was trying to find where this topic started but couldn't find it so sorry for going back. Am I to understand that the Tweeter (and I'm assuming the Mid) should be wired to the #2 terminal? Or just the tweeter? Also, was this incorrectly setup from the factory? I have 40-4024a speakers, but I'm sure this still applies.

Thanks

From the factory the tweeters were wired out of phase. This was not a mistake but was done to try and reduce the time difference between the mid and tweeter. I would not change it with the stock crossover. With my new one, tier 2, looks like you will invert both mid and high from the factory posistion. It will be confirmed when I complete the design, of which I am close!

tweeter hookup

i checked to see how my tweeters were wired. it turns out i mistakenly changed it, assuming that they were hooked up with normal polarity rather than the reversed. it sounds much better in reversed mode - i was wondering why they didnt seem as loud after i bypassed the lpad. im enjoying the sound a lot! thanks

Mach One 4029 Tier 2 Redesign Status

Good News! I have completed the Tier 2 design and have been listening for more than 100 hours to the results. I can't say enough about how awesome these speakers are now. The dynamics and transient response is better than most that I have heard! I am sure there are many that may question this, but I say mod a pair any listen! I have had a few other engineers to listen in a blind test against many 8-10K speakers. Each one and every time selected the Mach Ones as the best sounding speaker, they had no idea what they were listening to!

It will take some time for me to document the mods as they require some thought and detail as to how they need to be done. I wanted to give you an update and let you know what's going on. Hope to get this written and posted in the next week. :D

Note: If you plan on doing this upgrade the Midrange needs the mod for the foam damper and the felt on the pole piece. You also must open up the midrange enclosure area to the woofer cabinet. This information can be found in this thread of you can download the Tier 1 PDF file, which will show how to do these mods. You can download the Tier 1 PDF at the link below:

Hey VL, other than crossover, can the mods of the tier2 be applied to 4024a?

BTW I wanted to ask you before but i kept forgetting, I read NOT in your mods, but elsewhere in the same Mach one thread that some people put some dampening materiel on outside of the mid horn backside enclosure , the part in the cabinet itself.... I did this as well, is that still ok? As i do not remember if you mentioned that in any of your posts....

Anyway i look anxiously forward to your tier2 posting!

Thanks for all your hard work and dedication!

Hey VL, what caps/inductors/resistors are you using in this mod? I've found that the quality of x-o parts can make a difference in a speaker's sound, but I've also found you don't need the most expensive components out there to get a good sound.

All the changes to the drivers, woofer, mid & tweeter that is listed in tier 2 can be done to both the 4024a and 4029! I have the 4024a woofer fixed, now I just need to run some test to see how it compairs to the 4029. If I had the 4024a horns as well I could confirm the crossover. But the driver changes as well as the mod to the cabinet can be used by both models.

Crossover Parts Used

Hey VL, what caps/inductors/resistors are you using in this mod? I've found that the quality of x-o parts can make a difference in a speaker's sound, but I've also found you don't need the most expensive components out there to get a good sound.

In my units I am using air-core inductors, 15ga on the woofers and I am using Dayton Audio polypropylene caps in the crossovers for all, lows, mids & high! The resistors are non-inductive ceramic 20 watts.

I thought I remember reading at one point that the 4029 model has a ferrofluid cooled mid that wasn't in the 4024. I'm not sure if that's true or even makes sense - or does it even matter. I guess I was just wandering if there was any differences between the 4024 and 4029 drivers (besides the woofer) that could cause an issue doing the mod?

Even tho' I'm a Mach One fan instead of an owner, I'm glad you're not using big-buck boutique parts. If you did that, someone would surely come along and say that was the source of the improvement and not good solid (re)engineering.

Driver Questions

That is one of the questions we are going to answer as I have some 4024a drivers on the way. However, I can tell you that only the 4029 has the Ferro-Fluid. This only makes a big difference at high power levels but it can be added to the 4024a!

great thread. I want to do the midrange horn mod. How do I remove it from the cabinet?
I have a 4024 which is similar to the 4024a photo.
