And yet, the 3.7i is said to be:

Go figure. In any event, I found the 3.7 more coherent sounding at Sea Cliff than their predecessors.
 
I would not venture any opinion against buying those near-mint 3.6s.

Be aware that they will need at least a meter of space between them and the wall behind them, like most dipole planars.

Regarding price level the 3.6 are 2400 dollar, The Finals are 2200,-

I dont know how this compares to the US
 
@E-Stat, Magnepan playing fast and loose with the word ribbon tweeter. Never really liked the name quasi-ribbon they use. It is just the same old speaker with flat wire instead of round wire. When someone uses the ribbon without the quasi- to describe the speakers drivers, any or all of them, it is just confusing the public. Magnepan is not alone in allowing consumer confusion, even using the wording themselves, as you linked. Happens all the time in advertising.

But you and I both know what a quasi-ribbon is and what a true ribbon tweeter is and the Magneplanar speakers have never had any true ribbons except as tweeters. I won't perpetuate the consumer confusion. It is the only reason I said anything.

There's also a set of Final 1.2 Full Range electrostats from the mid 90's available on the sales listings.
Anyone has some input here? Price is roughly the same.

Ooooh! that certainly does make it harder, as a confirmed Magnepan fan, I'd say.
Go listen to both before you decide.

(edit to add) I see you decided, I'd dearly love a pair of 3.6's in my house, the true ribbon is really a treat,(I have a pair of 2.5r with true ribbons, and 1.6QR, the contemporary with the 3.6) sweet!

Just prevent air from passing through them. You can roll them in a blanket to keep a puff of air from ripping that thin aluminum foil tweeter.

The correct tweeter cover for the 2.5, early IIIs and such is a chunk of metal banding that magnetically attaches to the tweeter.

The seller should have these, just ask and if he does install them carefully, just letting them snap onto the tweeter might be enough to damage the tweeter, although I haven't had a problem letting them snap a bit. If not wrap them or otherwise cover the tweeter.

Magnepans and Mye stand in factory boxes
The speakers are really mint condition, I will post more pictures when I have finished mounting them.

I got two sets of Soundcare Superspikes for free. They fit directly to the Mye stands.
The seller was a really nice guy with 15 years experience with Magnepans. He told me a lot about the different models he has owned.

He also gave me a filter he reccomended for CD players, DAC's, Laptops, and in some cases preamps.

And this guy was happy to talk about cables. Most of his theories went over my head, but he gave me for free 500 dollars worth of his home made power cables just to have me testing them o_O Me - a cable sceptic.
And I tell you the cable in the middle is the factory NAD which actually I thought was quite solid. Its not.
Number two from inside was his first attempt, the outer big one is his latest. Its over 4 kg's :eek:
This guy had a huge cable running from the power inlet of his house, straight through his living room(floor) and to some huge net filters and heavy boxes I dont remember the name of just to feed his amps, the earth spear came straight out of his living room floor !
Amps by the way was 700 watts of PS Audio Stellar mono blocks driven by Naim NDX2

Nice, I’m enjoying following along on your adventure with these Maggie’s! Regarding power cords, I wonder how thick the power lines are in the walls of his house/residence!? :idea:

He had the protection strips and all the factory boxes. I put them on air pillows for the transport , hope they made the trip
 
Before I forget it
We AXB the 20.1 and 3.6's even run left/right comparison.
Main first impressions from the very short session is 20.1 has maybe a touch bigger soundstage, is louder (Im guessing 5-6 dB with same input) and is more 'bass heavy'
I honestly thought the bass from the 3.6 was more tight and precise, this of course is room/placement dependant. Owner's house is a big log cabin, huge living room around 1000 ft2, distance from front wall around 4-5 ft (also he insisted set up with the tweeters inside and turned 2-3 degrees outwards from sweetspot (presumably to have more dipole effect , and avoide the center 'hole' between speakers with the large distance between them)
Personally I think the sidewall reflections in his room was a bit too much, and probably or maybe enhanced by the outward tilt and short distance to sidewall.

again- this was a very short session.

The Magnats will have a long brake for shure.
I dont dare to sell them though as they are very rare around here.
