Magnovox Tube Tuner & Amp

I just picked up this Magnovox tuner & amp.

The amp uses 4 6V6 tubes in the output.

The person ripped them out of a console at some earlier date.

Nice.....one of my favorite "power" amps. You can do a little tweeking, some paint and a frame, and you have a nice tube driver.

You see that "8802" stamp on the top? Go to the "search" tab at the top of the page, select the Google search, and punch in that number. You'll be reading for the next week, at least.

I think the search is still not working correctly. Easiest to Google and limit to AK site by putting this in Google search field:

[ 8802 site:audiokarma.org ]

And you'll get what you need.

Google search is working fine. There's a custom audiokarma Google search box under the search tab. It's the quicker way of getting to where you went. :thmbsp:

was there a 3rd chassis not in the pic? that would be the MPX, need it for stereo on the tuner.

After listening to the 9302 (6BQ5), the 165,175,185 and the 8802, I'd say the 8802 is the best sounding of all the maggie amps that Ive converted.

That'll be a great candidate for a full on conversion. The tuner/preamp, not so much. Theres a 6EU7 in there you should save though.

This one sounds better than my ST70 at comparable levels.

Really???
I've got an 8802 here and a 8601 ( SE EL84s) and I seem to prefer the EL84s to the 6V6s.

What did you do to the 8802? I recapped mine with Orange drops and did the balance control resistor mod. Kegger has lent me some 6V6s to roll too and has offered to try to tweak the amp via some circuit mods to tune the sound to something more grabbing. I'm trying to fall in love with it, but I think I'm just too captivated with the EL84 sound.

Still, I'd like to know if there's something obvious I'm missing

maggies are all giggles and grins i have a mutt brother to the 02 in the 01 series which has a extra 6eu7 ??? and the 6ca4 rectifier

I didnt really do anything special. Upped the values on the couplers a little bit and matched the tubes. Everything else is stock.
Heres a pic of the under.

I see. Maybe I just need to balance out the volumes a bit more when I listen. The EL84 amp does have more volume, so maybe this isn't a fair test, then again, I've been listening to EL84s for 3-4 years and may be used to their sound.

Yup, Google works fine, it's AK that sometimes doesn't. At times the AK search doesn't work at all or doesn't pull in everything it should, as if there was a problem with the indexing. Also Google has the advantage of searching on more than one word string which I have never been able to do with AK search.
