Marantz 1060 Recap

Sound Check after 24hrs Main Caps: (1) EPCOS 10000uf/100v, (2) Nichicon KG 6800uF 63V

That Marantz sound (Low smooth grunt ) is Live and Well...Replacing the Original Main "Old Age" Caps with Epcos and Nichicon KG I hear the following:

Deeper Low End that is Clean and Instruments have better separation.

Going to let this go another 24hrs....then will replace the P400-Tone/Pre-Amp C401/402 Mylar 0.22uf/50v with MUNDORF EVO Aluminum + Oil Films 0.22uf/450v 4%

:lurk: lurking with comment: the amp boards in the 2440 look exactly like the 1060 except it's obvious that the 1060 has bigger transistors.
 
Installed the MUNDORF EVO Aluminum + Oil Films on P-400 Tone/Pre Amp Board C401/402

Going to let this Burn-In for 50hrs.

I will concur with Pat...The Mid's have Cleaned Up Big Time...I can cleanly hear the instrument's even more in the Mid End. Easy to listen...That Marantz Magic is STILL in tack.

Once this Burns-In...Last item...P-900 Phone Board Replace C917/918 Mylar 0.47uf/50v with MUNDORF EVO Aluminum + Oil Films 0.47uf/450v 4% and time for some vinyl.

That Epcos 50mm looks fantastic in there!

The EVO's @ C401/C402-They add and ease to the entire presentation, and have a see through quality as to the effect where you can clearly look into and picture the sound stage. No matter how complex the music gets they do not get flustered, vocals are amazing in dimention and body. Along with the Silmics which need 100 hours the EVO's need more and will really snap into an even tighter focus. The best part they do not cost $$$$$$$ and they are of a some what compact size, compared to say the Supremes with which they share most of it's qualities. For install they can be vertically mounted or subdued with a wiretie as is the common practice.

Did that early 1060 have the side support rods that go from the top rear corner to the top front corner? Did it have the sheet metal shield for the phono stage? I believe these were on early 1030s and maybe some other units but I'm glad my 1030 has those the engraved faceplate, pre/power (std on the 1060, only on early 1030) and a cabinet. But I'm missing that mid tone control, the low filter, the aux 2 input/second mic input and that extra power boost of 30 wpc instead of 15. But the 1030 is a cute little unit that sounds nice.

In a post a couple of weeks ago in one of my threads, you posted a pic of your P400 tone board where you had gone back to the green mylar cap on C401 and C402. Have you since tried the Mundorf EVO in those locations and what is now your final preference? I'm just curious because I left the original green caps in there in my 2270 and am considering trying some films.
CohibaJoe, how are the EVO caps sounding for you after some break-in?

The Fat Browns are excellent!

The fat browns are good enough that they need not be replaced as they are excellent. The 2230 I was doing for stupidhead-he wanted to kick up the phono board to the best it could be.

There are only a select few good film caps that will actually fit/install well in the small places on the marantz boards. The Mundorf EVO Oils for C401/C402 work perfect. And if using the "phono" input installing the Sonicap films help really show what the Mundorfs are really doing.

How did you tie-strap those EVO caps at C401/402? It looks like you put an extension on the board to do this.
 
For reliability and aesthetics I wanted to anchor them. So it is only a 1"X1" adhesive 4 way wire tie mount, it is adhered into position, and then the cap is subdued into submission via the wire tie. This is done after the soldering install.

I am leaving the MUNDORF EVO Aluminum + Oil Films Tone/Pre-Amp Board.

As posted wonderful sounding.

I just added the MUNDORF EVO Aluminum + Oil Films C917/918 Phone Board. I saw Pat's 2230 thread on using Sonicap GenII. I am going to place an order in to also check these out.
 
Thanks, Pat. The 4-way adhesive tie-strap mount makes sense. I will pick some up at Home Depot. I have various .22uf film I'm going to experiment with in c401/402. I might order some EVO caps later for evaluating. Since these poly films take a while for break-in, I need to put my patience cap on. :thmbsp:
 
To help avoid frustration and just a comment, the stock films at this location sound very very good, and most I have tried to replace with just do not sound right. If you want let me know what you are going to try.

I also put in a order for Reliable Capacitor RTX 0.47µF / 400VDC...will be here end of the week.
 
So my question just went completely ignored. Ok I know now that the 1030 is a pos and isn't allowed in a 1060 thread even though I have the same pre-power and added chassis stiffening and a phono board shield. I'm ok with that, I'll go away now.







Maybe since you guys don't have these pieces I should post pics of them so you can see what you are missing. Nice having a phono shield, all the good gear has that, HK 330C, Kenwood gear, Luxman gear and others. And who would complain about extra chassis stiffening braces.

I have a 1030 and love it!
I will be happy discuss it's virtues and flaws, perhaps you should start a new thread.

Oh I'm just picking at the 1060 boys. Gotta let em know what they are missing. I've already stated what I'm missing with that junior unit. But if the 1060 does not have the braces and phono board cover, those would be good parts to add to the unit when a lowly 1030 dies and gets parted.

Had to comment on the use of such an instrument and your choices of using Muldorf caps which I always thought of being used for speaker crossovers.
My HP VTVM sits on the shelf, collecting duct. It was my parting gift from the Motorola test lab job, eons ago.:D
P.S. I picked up a HP 3478A for $50 on ebay, it works really nice, no drift, no warm up.
Nice projects, keep them up Marantz collectors

I have tried both of these Polystyrene films. For me they are too large to be usable in the phono positions. The RT's are very very good! At 1.8" or 50mm+ they will not be a clean install. If you are working on say a 2270 amp board at C751 now you are talking you have 40mm+ of real estate to work with. For me the Gen II's work best for the phono board as they are very sweet yet in no way get in the way of the music they are very accurate, you have your spice on the pre board with the EVO Oils. You will see the RTX lurking inside many high end pieces.
