Marantz 1060 Recap

Maybe since you guys don't have these pieces I should post pics of them so you can see what you are missing. Nice having a phono shield, all the good gear has that, HK 330C, Kenwood gear, Luxman gear and others. And who would complain about extra chassis stiffening braces.

I have tried both of these Polystyrene films. For me they are too large to be usable in the phono positions. The RT's are very very good! At 1.8" or 50mm+ they will not be a clean install. If you are working on say a 2270 amp board at C751 now you are talking you have 40mm+ of real estate to work with. For me the Gen II's work best for the phono board as they are very sweet yet in no way get in the way of the music they are very accurate, you have your spice on the pre board with the EVO Oils. You will see the RTX lurking inside many high end pieces.

Thanks Pat.....OK final order on Films. Yes the Reliable and Mundorf Supreme Silver Oil are BIG....But Sonic Craft is running a 20% off Deal and I cannot pass up.

If I were to pick one location for the Silver/Oils it would be at C401/C402 on the preamp board that is my most valued location 1060/2230. The next most valued location would be the amp inputs but alas as we both know nothing really fits there but the MKS2. So next would be the phono C701/C702 (2230)
IMHO with a 2230/1060 it is actually worth using a pr of Silver/Oils and you will def not be disappointed, you will be falling in love.

With the Silver/Oils due to the size of the leads you will need to do a very slight mod to the board. I use a 1/8" hand held drill bit to slightly open up the board, I have done it many times and it is of no concern or worry, you will be removing a very small amount of board material, and not any of the trace pad.

To save money I have bounced off of LeeStereo the .47uf phono films and he suggest you can actually use a .22uf or a .1uf saving a bit of cash, and even getting a slightly smaller cap, as the install will in no way be clean, but sonically it will be a beaut!

The stock C701/702 capacitors are 0.47µF and with R706/R707 form a high-pass with a F3 cut-off of 0.34Hz. You can use a smaller size capacitor and still get a more than low enough F3 cut-off: a 0.1µF capacitor will give a 1.6Hz cut-off.

Regarding capacitor size: if a cap is unnecessarily large, the signal has that much more material to pass through which isn't going to help the signal quality; a quote from the V-cap web site: "The higher the capacitor value, the more material in the signal path. The more material in the signal path, well, you know where this is going... the less transparent the signal becomes. When it comes to output coupling caps, less is more, as long as you've achieved a reasonable -3db point."
 
As talking to Pat....I have taken out the ELNA Silma II and replaced with Wima MKS4 1uf 63V at C414 C415 Tone/Pre-Amp Board.

The Image has Improved...For me it's like the instruments are coming out of the speakers.

The Films are somewhere on a UPS truck...Snow delay. I will also say the "Brown Ugly" film (Phone Board) do sound good.

Talking over with Sonic and Mundorf..The MCap Supreme Silver/Oil are not recommended for equipment that put's out Heat. The Cap will derogate over time. As I do not see this with 1060...I think the list is good at the moment.

I have a 2230 that is mirrored to the 1060....I will be trying Reliable Capacitor RT for Pre-Amp/Tone Board.

Great job on this unit! The 1060 looks great, I appreciate the circuit simplicity and understated design. I would like to recap one and experiment with diferent capacitors too.

I recently, recaped my unit but decided to be very conservative, until I get familiar with sound. I wouldn't mind to revisit it later and upgrade key components. Not that I think it sounds bad! It's actually dam good!!

Thanks for the pictures, I find that the boards have very nice aesthetics and are specially pleasing to the eyes after being recaped with such nice components.

Noticed that the tone board is very similar to the 2270, but seems to have some extra capacitors and the local filter appear to have a higher value. I wonder about the sonic diferences. Did you bumpied any values here? Also those big black resistors look good in there, they're regarded in guitar amps.

I can hear why you recommend the GenII's Pat..The Mids and Treble do Pop..The low end is more the covered.

I will be swapping out the other Films in 2230 (maybe I will start a thread?)

I will wrap this up Sunday with finial Pics.

Thank You!!! It's a learning journey for me...Yes on the Extra Bump Up with Caps. Would like to Thank Pat on pointing to the AMRG's. I have Marantz 2230 that I am using TAKMAN Carbon Films...Also Very Nice(still burning in). I will be gathering a Parts list..by the week.

The 1060 interior looks very spacious in terms of height, much easier to fit bigger caps, much more real state :) the new caps tend to be smaller but space is a common problem on receivers, I instaled a bigger cap on my phono and barely clears the bottom cover...
 
Excellent work! Can not wait to see your 2230.

The 2230 phono board gives you way more real estate for films, (then the 1060 phono board) in fact the alternate pins on the outputs are 22.5mm! Have fun.:music:
