I may be restoring a 1200, depending on if I can get it from "that" site. This is what the seller says:

"Selling for parts or restoration. I ran a DAP into the auxiliary inputs and I had no sound from the headphones or any of the speaker outputs."

Hmm.. I wonder why...

You got it at an OK price. Someone has been poking around. There is at least one screw missing on the right amp board. The left amp has an odd bend in it. Looks mostly original. Good luck. Post here for help if needed.

Yes that is the one! You are correct, this is by no means a pristine unit. But what the heck, if I can make it work for this price I'll be happy from what I read here it sounds really good. Since I restored a 240, I thought I could use some extra parts I got for it.

This seems to be the first revision of the 240/250 amp boards with a germanium diode which I got some as well as most all transistors except for the outputs. If the unit is not totally busted I may be able to get it back in good shape.

As always I appreciate and I am humbled by the knowledge people here are willing to share.

If the tape monitor switch is in the down position (In setting), which is the one in the very center on a 1200, no sound will come through the Aux or normal inputs.

Or maybe it's just missing the jumpers from pre-out to Amp In?
 
@MarantzRefrb hey isn't that the one you restored? This is nice to know as well! If it IS that simple then I'll recap and clean it. It will definitely need two jumpers there models are not like the newer receivers in that regard. If it sounds any close to the 240 I think this is a winner.
 
That is the one I restored, thanks, it gets the most use around here.

I have read that the 1200 is the best kept secret in terms of the performance-to-price, seems not many realize it's a 3300 pre-amp, and a 250 power amp, 100 WPC, in one box! Got mine for less than $500???!! (broken). They're also really easy to restore, especially if the original output transistors are still good.
 
That's great! I got this for 450 give or take which is a little more than half what I paid for a 240. While the auction was going on I kept reading your post and I got very excited to get my hands on one. I hope this will be a fun project.
Both the 250 and 3300 go for a lot more each!
 
That should be a lot of fun, I miss that project, wish I had another to fix.

If you got the 1200 non-B model, those are engraved face plates, the B model is printed. Made in the USA still too!

Maybe this parts list can save you some time, it's an Excel sheet that had to be zipped in order to upload here. Hope this helps.

Thank you so much! Yes this is a non B and it is great to know it is engraved. The amp boards look like the version one of the 240.
It feels like these models are American muscle cars, heavy, iron beasts. Of course the Japanese are great looking and sound good but just like cars not so fun to work on lol
 
The unit seems to be missing quite a bit of screws and it has no feet (I think it was in a wood case).

Would anyone know what kind of screws I would need for the bottom and top cover, including what I think holds the transformer, it looks like it has only 2 of the 4. I tried searching but all I could find were newer JIS model screws for the units made in Japan.

I have a 1200 non-B that I got when I was fairly new to the hobby. I didn’t feel like I was up to it, so Bob Speece did a full restore on it. It is definitely my best sounding amp. But, it is all original and does not have an engraved faceplate. They must have changed at some point during the run.
 
Looking closely to the photos it gives me the impression that indeed this is NOT an engraved model (which is OK with me). On the bright side there are no fading anywhere, all letters and markings are in good shape, just in need of a good cleaning. Also all the buttons are there and I can't see anything bent. Will tell more when I get it here!

I have 1200 serial# 2159, if I run my thumb along the Marantz label, I can feel the indentation. What serial# do you have Steve?

It's hard to tell it's engraved, even in person, it's not that deeply cut, or 3D, like the champagne 22xx model engraving. Either way, they sound incredible, and very powerful. The Loudness setting really kicks in the bass at low volumes, can sound huge, quietly.

The screws are difficult to come by, they aren't standard, or the same as the 22xx models, and there are more than 4 different types of screws used. In fact, because I was using the wrong type of screw to hold in the daughter-board cards, it actually warped the Interconnect board that the daughter-boards connect to, and that's what made my Balance pot not work correctly. I'll need a screw and pitch gauge, in order to tell you the exact replacements. Might take a while to find that in storage.
