Marantz 2230 Gift, for whom?

The receiver arrived last week, after searching for a while.
Marantz 2230, all original but the output transistors
and one cap. The owner bought it in 1973 and used it
for years. He agreed to sell it to me because he doesn't
use it any longer. And it just sat for a long time.

Now 47 years later it's my responsibility to restore it
so it will last another 50 years. It will be a special gift
for someone.

One of the things I was looking for was a simple all in
one box solution for music, radio, TV etc. It would get
moved from time to time and probably used quite a bit
in the future. A legacy gift.

For Whom?

This receiver will be for my 7 year old little girl.
She'll hear it when she receives it for her 8th birthday.
She loves music, dance, and plays piano. I'm nourishing
her love of music. I also want her to have some memories
with her dad, mom, family, and friends to enjoy it too.

There will come a time when I'll depart this earth
hopefully when she's older. She turnin on and listen to
the music, she'll remember how much her dad
loved her and gave her the gift of music. Not
from some cheap plastic throw away box.

So I've got a couple of months to get this up and
running. It works and there are no known issues
except the front panel lights etc.

The outputs were replaced with MJ21194Gs years ago.
The job is good, clean, very professional, from the detailed
Mechanical Engineer that he is.

The hard part will be doing cleaning and recap,
replacing parts etc, with out her seeing or knowing
what I'm doing.

I've also got three other projects going, so it's going to
be taxing.

Steven Tate has sent me some information and provided
insight as to how to proceed, with information that MBuras
developed in this forum for suggested capacitor replacement
on the various boards.

The former go to cap kit guy, running dog doesn't do it any longer, only service
and rebuilding. Working my way through some of the threads here
and trying to ID proper lead spacing on the caps, producing a proper
BOM to submit and buy what I need, with out being able to get in the
amp right now and verify it proved challenging. A few more days
working on it and I decided it would be simpler for me to contact
patfont and use one of his kits rather than try my luck on ebay.

I've got good tech skills from basic to advanced in some areas.
Other's like AM/FM tuner skills, RF skills I don't have. I have
a full bench, but not a workshop for making things I can fudge it.
I'm a tube guy. I went back to school to learn Silicon and got
my Tech degrees and certificates. Let me tell you it's not easy
having to deal with faculty that haven't progressed in 20 plus
years. Then when your a mature student wanting to learn and
they tell you the wrong stuff they screw you. You fight back,
but still. It is what it is. I was lucky I made it as they kept
closing classes and not offering classes, putting them
off so I wouldn't graduate.

I made it, so here I am. That is the short version of it.

So there is all the information that no one cares about
but at least you know where I'm coming from.

It will be another of these threads and that is okay.

Receiver Stuff
I have some good pics of it boxed and receiving it.
I opened it up for a look see and it's all in there.
Dusty from sitting in garage for years. Two knobs
chipped, and the front panel bowed out in the center.
Probably from being dropped face down. I found
knobs loose in the box. I didn't know if it should have
fiber washers behind the face where the screws attach.

Also seems like there was foam or something where the
metal cabinet meets the panel is gone.

Thinking how to straighten the face plate with out damaging it.

It's late I can't think any more.

Such are the perils of being a dad.
I bought my way out of this one,
I explained to the tooth fairy that
and extra dollar was in order because
I lost her tooth down the drain.

Not THE drain, she plugged the sink drain,
but when it slipped out of my hand into
the sink and I caught it on the side and
pulled it up to lift it out, it slid into the
overflow hole and then down the drain
it went never to be seen again.
 
Here are the pics after I got the crate in the house.
Really it was packed in a crate.
It is actually still in there, so my
little girl won't get into it.

And that folder, yes that has the original documentation
that came with the amp. Including the extended
service plan, the factory designated receiver and
it's original schematic with the dealers stamp on it.

Looks good. Probably ought to keep an eye on eBay for a used faceplate. Its virtually impossible to straighten them where you can't tell it was ever bent.
 
Update, received my cap kit from patfont for the 2230.
It's a top shelf kit with good components and pat even
soldered on the main filter power supply connectors
and did a fine job. I'm not sure I could do better.

My first order of business is to removed the 2230 from
the shipping crate and clean it out of all the dust, dirt,
and grime it's collected over the years.

It's taking it out back and blowing it out with compressed
air along with natural bristle brush cleaning.

I know this one owner amps history and it wasn't as
as closet queen, rather it was used, listened to
and enjoyed.

Since I haven't worked on these receivers before I'm
following along on Perkri's thread (LINK) as he has good input
from runningdog, Steven Tate, patfont, Skywatcher, slowpat, and rBuckners' dog and
others folks as they contribute.

The timing couldn't be better. As I get around to things
I'll document it.

Before I forget to ask, When replacing lamp, vellum, etc, what is the best way to secure
AM/FM Pointer? Secure to one side, then tape it down?

Nothing quite like baptism by fire. Doing doco and photos before I start work.
Doing a clean it up, blow it out, brush it out, get all the crap out of it so i don't
end up with it on the bench. Yadda, yadda, yadda.

Then my kid comes out and joins me with her toys...since the amp was
apart I just continued cleaning blow it out, she didn't bat and eye, in fact
she thought i was going to be working on my 69 Chevelle, she loves
the muscle car. :)

Then taking pics and finished cleaning was going to have one last pic
and dumped the four screws off the mikita drill case I put them on.
Started moving and checking everything darned if that screw went and
did the disappearing act on me. I still have three screws holding
that board in, but still.

Kinda like the last time I was working on the Chevelle, dropped the
locking gas cap, ran down the drive way and never found it again.
Really.

It's shut eye for me, I'll post pics tomorrow, etc

QUESTION:

Anyone know where to get knobs for these 2230s? I need
two of them and a face plate as mine got bent out in the center during
shipping.

Here are the first batch of pics back from the lab.
They are pretty explanatory.

The first pics show after dusting, brushing, and blowing it out.
I'm trying to figure out year of manufacture, as the receiver never
had a SN Plate, going back to the original purchaser. Even the
warranty information on the inside front cover of the instruction manual from
the dealer, no SN information. Nothing in the other documentation received
from the original owner. I also asked him and he doesn't recall anything and
confirmed the information on the inside of the instruction manual.

The pic with callouts is after a chemical wipe down and cleaning.
I didn't bother cleaning the caps as their in process being removed.

I had a visitor for a while last night and she kept me company and didn't
have a clue. She likes hanging out with her dad, and I'll enjoy it while I can.

I've got dozens more pics also, but we've all seen them before.

That's about it for now.

Looking good! Pay close attention to those two identical big grey caps that are almost touching on the main amp boards. The boards may have incorrect polarity markings, so take note of the original placement. Nice to have a good helper. That was me over 60 years ago “helping” my dad as he built ham radio gear from scratch. :D
 
Now that is very cool Steven. That is what I want for my little girl, to have those memories and
not know that it was her receiver that I'm working on. She checks stuff out and plays with her
dinosaurs, putting them in color order. Or she'll bring our her little finger dolls and make
a house out of blocks etc.

As an older Dad I now know the importance of building memories for my little girl.

I think whether or not they are mismarked depends on where they were in the model run. I recently worked on a very early serial number and a very late serial number unit. The early unit was mismarked, and someone had installed per the silkscreen. The cap was blown. I know it wasn’t original because both caps were axial caps standing on end. The later unit was marked correctly. I’m not sure when they changed.
 
Well it never hurts to mark the board as you go through to replace the parts.
It helps much that there is such a good membership here on AK too.
 
QUESTION:

I'll assume these amps can stand up to some brief HF square wave testing with out melting down?

Among other things, I plan to do some before and after testing.
That is how the 2230 receiver is right now, and then after I do
the cap and some device changes.

I have ears (or used to) and I also like to verify what I hear
or what I think I hear. Might also be a good change to use
the QA401 that hasn't gotten much use lately. That will give
me an FFT of harmonic content to 20KHz.

From your pictures the faceplate bowing out is visible, but it may just be an installation issue and it is not actually bent. On early production 22xx models there was a brass collar that screwed into one of the controls that held in the faceplate near the center to address this bowing out; later production 22xx didn't have this part installed.

Some posts back you asked about the three green boxes. I saw one picture in that post of what you were asking about, at least I think so. If so that board is for the FM stereo demultiplexing and none are relays. They are hybrid assemblies. The largest one is the low pass output filter to get any 19kHz pilot signal off of the outputs.

BTW -- As a grandpa, love to see your little one! Precious!!
