MB Quart owners - Raise your hands!!

Hey all,

I was wondering who amongst you guys out there have any MB Quart speakers. I am a huge fan of this manufacturer and have many sets of them for the home as well as the car. So far my collection of MB Quart speakers are as follows:

Vera VS 1F - Fronts for my HT rig
Vera VS 1C - Center
Vera VS 1SW - Subwoofer

QLS230 - Side surrounds
QLS230 - 2nd pair side surround
QLA80 Balcony Digital - Rear surround

QLS530 - Bookshelf 2 way 6 1/2" do-it-all-right bedroom speakers

QLS50 (x12) - Little 2 way 4" satellites that rock the world.

QLT50 - "Terra Algerique" Ceramic 2 way 5 1/4" satellites on iron and glass stands blue in color
QLT60 - Ceramic subwoofer (2 x 6 1/2" isobaric) for Terra satellites

190 - bookshelf 2 way 6 1/2"
220 - bookshelf 2 way 6 1/2"
280 - bookshelf 2 way 8"
350S - Floorstander 2 way 8"

And that's just for home speakers, for the car:

My Car: 93 Taurus SHO

QSD 216 - 2 way 6 1/2" separates front doors
QWD 160 - extra 6 1/2" woofer for the front door (2 woofers per side)

PSD 216 - 2 way 6 1/2" separates (rear fill)

Powered by:
QAA 4250 - 4x250w amp - 250w x 2 for tweeters (front) 250w x 2 rear fill
QAA 2500 - 2x500w amp - 500 w per side for the 4 QWD 160's in the front doors
QAA 1000 - Mono block 1000w for the 2 infinity Kappa Perfect 12"subs

The front doors are actively xover'ed at 2500Hz using the amps internal xover and the subs start at 80Hz and down. The rear fill uses the passive xover that came with the front speakers (QXD 216) instead of the one that it was supplied with (PXD216) because it is better.

Girlfriend's 91 Miata:

QM 160 competition 6 1/2" bass drivers
QM 25 competition 1" tweeter

Powered by Xtant 2200ix (2x200w) for the 6 1/2"s and the 302 (2x150w) for the tweeters actively xover'ed at 2400Hz using the amp's xover modules.

I also have a huge collection of spare drivers and tweeters for both home and car in my collection.

Just wondering who else has MB Quart speakers and what their thoughts are on them. I wanna know!

You have a very good taste, in fact MB Quart is a very fine manufacturer from Germany, two years ago i purchased two 15" Car subs from them at retailer price, they were very good each one was playing with a Mac Audio Fearless 1000D and they pumped out very powerful bass in sealed boxes, MAC Audio may not be a very reputated manufacturer, but the Fearless series was an exception those amps were very powerful, mine was stated from manufacturer to pump 900Watts rms @2ohm and it measured 1080W Rms@ 2ohm, besides that a lot of people stated and right that this amp has a tremendous amount of bass reserve, i only needed 1/4 bass turn and the right gain for them to blast music as hell, each one was dampened by a 8 Farad Kipus Cap, so far the best subwoofer system i've acquired for my car...Unfortunately i heard that the MB Quart factory has ended production 2 years ago, i don't know if it is true or not, but shortly after i purchased those 2 subs the shop owner told me they were closing production, if it is for real, it is a pity, MB Quart surprised me positively.

As stated previously in this thread, part of the MB crew in Germany has started a new factory called German Maestro.
I give look at their components and I really would like to design an home speaker in the "Watt/Puppy way" around their magnificent tweeter, but I think could be very hard to find their components, here, in Italy...

They made beautiful-sounding car speakers back maybe 10-15 years ago, but I've kinda' lost touch with the whole car stereo thing since then (I used to buy the magazines and go to the events and all that). That component set (5.25" or 6.5") they made was a thing of beauty. Like a modern, idealized, car stereo version of the Dynaco A25. Musical in that same sense, and very, very-smooth. I heard some fantastic car setups based on MB Quart mids and highs. Two pairs of those running on McIntosh power plus a couple of very-nice 12's, powered by a Soundstream class A amp was like listening to your dream system. Soundstream made equally-nice component speakers. I ran their separates AND their subs. That company was serious about quality. Their subs were massive, with magnet structures designed for some heavy-duty excursion. I just bought them simply because I liked the way they sounded at real-world volumes.

I have tweeters "QM 19HX" bought them occasionaly just to try - and I found it very nice. Cannot found to much info but they seem to be from some 3-way set as they need to be cut from 4200Hz lowest croossover frequency and even better lik 4500Hz.

Well... they are very very precise, quite rough and even too bright when not tuned properly. But when tuned - I heard quite new sounds :). The "brushes" sound like brushes not "shhhhh" and these little plates on drum set are just brilliant. Very very precise. Only in some songs it sounds metal-ish - not nice.. but it's rare. Definitely they have their own character (warm and precise). The best tweeets for Rock music that I like.. these are warm and precise in Jazz music and become little rough in Rock music - it's just right. wish to hear some nice MB's ion full range not only 4500Hz+ tweeters..

Labarum:
I tried several capacitors - and I must say these tweeters are extremely susceptible to changes in installation and crossover. I was making my own xover - and after changing capacitor and resistor they started sounding a class higher (much more precise and clean in highest freqs). But the best was putting bypassing capacitor - it was like two classes higher - OMG - compeletely new sounds - and far far better imaging and space. At the end I used procab speaker cables and the stage became more precise.

Chrissssssss
Can you please write something aboud PSD 216 set? I got opportunity to buy those. But have no idea how they sound - I imagine tweeter (xover 2500Hz seems nice) is like better version of my qm 19hx. Can you compare it to something? Like more Morel-ish ore rather more Hertz-ish or something?
I listen to the Rock and Vocals and blues guitars mainly these are most important to sound great for me..

Just joined the ranks of MB Quart owners, so here goes... My MCS 390 floostanding speakers. With some marks, but they sound awesome!

Very similar to the ones I used to sell, probably a later version. Very nice speakers though probably one of the more puzzling grill designs ever. Were they trying to mess up the imaging?

Bringing this thread back from the dead. I have a pair of 490 mcs coming soon and I'm wondering if anyone knows what the efficiency is on them? I'm guessing upper 80s, but haven't spotted that stat anywhere. I'm really looking forward to hearing them. Any suggestion as to suitable amplification? Tubes? What sort of w/ch do they need?

No info to provide fiddlefye, but in the spirit of keeping the thread alive, I've got the Quart One bookshelf speakers, which don't get much play these days.

But in my daily driver truck, I've had MBQ separates for around 22 years now. The truck is about to die in another year or so, and I'm trying to find something cheap to fit into the holes in the door where the tweeeters are mounted. I really hate to let go something that's worked so perfectly for so long.

A funny thing that people in warmer climates might not know - ferrofluid-cooled voicecoils don't work well below 10F degrees or so. It takes a couple minutes of music playing for them to literally warm up enough so the oil is at a normal viscosity.

I'm really quite curious how the 490s sound. It isn't exactly as if I need more speakers and I don't expect them to replace the 3As or Vandersteens, but for the price I can afford to try something different and they look interesting. Still curious about efficiency ratings, but I guess when the speakers arrive in a few days I'll find out for myself.

I finally managed to pick up the 490s this afternoon, brought them home, gave the cabs a little feed and hooked them up. Very nice so far with a Yamaha CA-1010. I have a feeling they will be an even better match to the McIntosh 250 or some t8bes perhaps. Experiments can be fun....

d1000s (powered sub) here. I really know nothing about it and don't remember what led to my decision to buy it all those years ago. I still enjoy it but really have no idea if it is appropriate for my system. It sounds good to me!

Anyone know about this sub?

I now own a pair of Quart 800's with dead tweeters. Has anyone identified a viable replacement for the 25mm Ti 95-6684 tweeters?

Cheers,
James

Once succumbed and bought fitted a pair of Quart Car audio speakers.
I found them bright articulate and generally unpleasant.
A bit annoyed given their pricings and "german' pedigree
As result they had a brief tenure.
Frankly I thought that MB Quart had long ago fallen off the radar.
Really a 93 Taurus?? Yamaha engined or not.

Really a 93 Taurus?? Yamaha engined or not.

Not sure that I understand that.

These came to me from someone that I work with for the grand total of €0.00. So there isn't a lot of risk involved. I just need to find some suitable replacement tweeters and recap them. And some cosmetic repairs. But I'm sure that they will fall within the range of what my daughter needs.

Cheers,
James

mb quart old school

Hi,

Thank you..

Good Morning,

I had the active MB 985s, about the most expensive speakers of MB Quart. They had a problem in th amps. The amps were totally different, different batch. For a price of 10.000 DM per pair, a bit disappointing. Furter, the speakers were then 10 years old, the manufacturer in German refused to repair them because 'they were to old'. So I sold the speakers for about 200 DM. Bad service!

Best regards, Fred

Hello everyone,
I am in search of some MB Quart speakers but I really don't know from where to start and which one to choose. They can be bookshelves or towers it really doesn't matter much . All that matters is that they sounds great. Not too expensive of course.
Reading this thread I've come to a conclusion that these models are for consideration: 600, one, QL-S530 and maybe 390. Which of these would you recommend and are there better models?
Thanks!

:lurk:

MB Quart made delightful-sounding car stereo speakers. Fantastic tweeters and equally-great midwoofers (Their old component separates back in the '90's were the bomb). A25/Wharfedale-like lushness. As musical as any car speakers I'd ever heard, and the only ones that seemed capable of that "breath of life" sound I dig so much these days. They were lusher than the Canton, ADS, Boston, and Soundstream separates I knew back in my car audio days. All those brands made great speakers, but they were just different flavors, I guess. The thing is, the voicing of their car speaker lines definitely seems to mirror their home hi-fi stuff (except for Soundstream, who I think never made any home speakers).

I'd really-like to get some Quarts myself. Some towers maybe.
