Miles per day on Road Trip

I actually think that it depends on a lot of factors. If I'm alone, I can even do 600 miles without any issues, and I would enjoy the trip. However, if there 3 other people in the car with me, I think 450 miles is the max, as everyone has their own needs and so forth. I hate traveling with my friend and his girlfriend as she is crying about everything, the speed, the food, the music, and so forth. The last time I went on a trip with them, we were in Germany. Honestly, I thought that I would beat the **** out of her. However, I understood there was no point in getting nervous, so I just found this website montaregio.de, and I started browsing for new places to visit in Germany.

When I was in my early twenties, I RT'd a few times b/w Miami (FL) and Chicago non-stop to/from. In three years of that never once turned in a 2-day trip @ that route.
In the 90s, when i made several road trips b/w Chicago and LA Basin, it was always three days whether I took the "northern route" (IL > IA > NE > CO > UT > AZ > CA) or "southern route" (IL > MO > OK > TX > NM > AZ > CA). The southern route I used less often as my trips were usually in summer, so warm temps meant the northern route was passable. I spent Night One in Western Nebraska, and Night Two (every time) in St George Utah, a town of which I became quite fond over the years.
PS: Miami to Chicago drive was -- one-way -- around 1,300 miles. This is easily the longest regular NS route I drove back in the states, but it is not the longest NS driving road trip of my life.
That occurred @ circa 1982 in the Soviet Union: Odessa to Chelyabinsk ... a one-way distance of 1,800 miles. Two comrades and I did that drive once and from Odessa to Chelyabinck we did it NS. We did the return trip in two days.
I did not drive ALL of the 1,800 miles, but I did drive ~ 80% of those miles.

We tend to go more by travel time than miles covered. In this case, an eight to nine hour span, trying to avoid passing through a large centre during rush hour.
We used to do a nine to ten hour runs, but have cut back.
The longest run was 31 hours non-stop, and this was way too long at the time!

Longest trip on a bike ('84 VF700C Magna) was 750 miles in one day. Pretty brutal... was 40F degrees for the last couple hours coming home.
Longest 4 wheeled vehicle non-stop (except for gas and a very brief bladder break or two) was from Syracuse NY area to Baton Rouge, just under 1600 miles (Scion FR-S). My wife drove for two hours to give my eyes a break, but otherwise I did the whole thing.
We routinely (at least a few times a year) drive 700 miles in one day. On more than one occasion, we've driven through the night from Syracuse to OBX to spend the day on the beach, eat at one of our favorite beach restaurants, get a good night's sleep, then drive home the next day.
Just completed a 2600 mile road trip a few days ago, and had a great time. SYR to Indy area day one, to Asheville, NC day two, hiked around the mountains for a few days (BEAUTIFUL hikes in that area.. .Douglas Falls was incredible), then reversed. There's something about being in a car, especially out of traffic, that just feels like peace and freedom to me. My wife and I both love road trips.

Used to sell and deliver specialty automobiles. I've done a LOT of road trips, and have driven in most of "the lower 48". There is some astonishingly beautiful stuff scattered around this country. There's also a great deal of the mundane. I mean, exactly how many Burger Kings and Comfort Inn's do we really need? 800 miles was a "good" day most of the time. I did over 1000 miles in a day once or twice, but it always stole time from the next day because I had to sleep in. I had a crew of older gentlemen that would drive other cars with me. Now I are one.
I still enjoy a good road trip. Drove out to the Maryland shore in January.

I have driven between NYC and Phoenix Az 4 times. When I have a destination in mind and am not sightseeing along the way...500 a day is the goal (that's driving a loaded uhaul with a car carrier pulled behind). I have driven from NYC to Miami as well but thats a two day trip at least at 1300 miles.
Wow! My hat's off to ya, man. In the summer of '82 I was twenty and rode my GL 500 from Athens, Ga to Beaumont, Tx for the love of a green eyed red haired girl. 780 miles and it beat the hell out of me! I had a really strange occurrence on the return trip, I guess some would call it "missing time". I remembered stopping for gas on the Georgia side of the Chattahoochee River and then waking up at home with no memory of the last 250 miles. Exhaustion I'm sure, but still pretty freaky.

Honestly man 1000 isn’t much harder than 780, it’s all a blur after 600 or so. I just ride a lot so getting saddle sore usually isn’t a problem, staying awake and aware can be really difficult.
This is why I currently wouldn't consider an electric vehicle.
Though I don't frequently take "big" road trips I still want the ability to do so without having to stop several times for recharging.
If only there was a way to swap battery packs quickly then EV's would be viable.

Tesla does have charging stations scattered about if you own a Tesla. Then it's just a quick 30 minutes to fill up. In the big scheme of things, it's not bad. Just take a 30-minute walk.
When I was a kid on vacation with the folks in the motor home typically 500-600 miles if were really pressed for time 700-800 miles in twelve hours !

2022 update
.. the above was posted back in 2018 when gas prices were roughly 1/2 per gallon of what they are now ... along with various other price increases. Still followed the 400+ miles per day on the way to our vacation destination this year. But the way back has increased to 500+ miles per day ... to save on hotel bills ... which helps to defray the cost of fuel and other things. We did about 550 miles in 12 hours on the way back home .. which included a stop for lunch and a couple of rest stops.

I belong to the Iron Butt Association, which is all about long distance motorcycle riding. I've done the Saddle Sore 1000, 1000 miles in 24 hours, the Bun Burner Gold, 1500 miles in 24 hours, and the 50cc, coast to coast in under 50 hours. For the 50cc I rode from San Diego to Jacksonville in 38 hours. Left San Diego on Saturday morning and was in Jacksonville Sunday night (less traffic going through large cities on weekends). Living in Iowa I had to first ride the bike out to San Diego and then back home again from Jacksonville, total about 5500 miles, but the to San Diego and from Jacksonville were at a more relaxed pace.
