OK, I'm up have a coffee in hand, and a clearer mind!
This all started last Sunday when Ohioway came over for an afternoon listening session on the main rig. After listening to SACD/Redbook CDs on the Sony 5400ES player, I threw some vinyl on the TD125/Unitrac1/Dynavector DV20x2 (1mv) through my M/S Phonomena II stage. The output was startling weak to my ears compared to the robust smooth output of the Sony, ( though I said nothing to Ohioway at the time) and this is what got me seriously thinking of making major changes.
They eyes don't have it!:thumbsdn:
Sunday, I brought the TD125 upstairs to the computer room and took the TD150/Jelco750D/Denon DL103r down to the main rig. After listening for a while, I was even more depressed as the output was tizzy, thin, without lushness, and uninspiring. Now I was even more determined to make some changes. So I thought I would rotate all the tables through the main rig and possibly consider swapping arms cartridges etc to determine which rig would be the unit to take on the newer modern design table.
Last night I fired up the main rig, and thought why not dial back the cartridge loading to see if that was the issue. It was at this point I realized as I gazed at the owners manual, and not the tiny print on the back of the phonomena that I had misread the print on the Phonomena to read 100 instead of 100k!
No wonder I was underwhelmed, and a total smuck for not realizing there was a loading problem. After last nights session I can now attest that all my hard work on the TD150 did not go to waste. That rig sounds gorgeous - solid warm bass super smooth silky midrange and very nice top end with lot's of air but not quite as extended as my other moving coils. Background is dead silent, and soundstage is deep and focused.
Sooo. It would appear to me I will have to save a bit more money to justify the outlay to see a huge improvement. I will also have some fun trying combinations of tables/arms/cartridges to come up with the best combination for the main rig, which will become the contender in the upcoming face off to determine whether the outlay justifies the end result to my aging ears.
Not sure where this journey will take me, but like all things audio for those of us with open minds the journey is a huge part of the enjoyment.
Relieved,
Jim
