Probably the most interesting aspect of this thread is each respondent's interpretation of how they think others rate their favorite artist in the first place.
In my OP I did mention " stirring the pot "

I don't know anyone actually who does care what a critic says. -
Lou Reed
Lou Reed must not know a lot of people.![]()
Springsteen is all right, by the way. He gets my seal of approval—I think he’s groovy. You notice the way the critics turned on him, like, after they were on him, right? When he needed them, they weren’t there. Critics. What does Robert Christgau do in bed? You know, is he a toe-****er? Man, anal-retentive—The Consumer’s Guide to Rock? What a moron! A Consumer’s Guide to Rock, man! I object to the ****ing liner notes. Start studying rock ‘n’ roll? I can’t believe it. “Baroque Rock: A Study by Robert Christgau.” John Rockwell, man. Wow! You know how heavy it is to get reviewed by Rockwell, and he says you’re intelligent? **** you! I don’t need you to tell me that I’m good. “Mr. Reed.” You know, you say, “Oh, man, I’m in The New York Times, it said ‘Mr. Reed.’” **** you! Your doorman wouldn’t kiss my ass, man, I don’t give a jackal. He, right, he studies at Harvard, right—monologue—but dig this, man, opera! A ****ing opera guy, man! And that’s the critic for The New York Times that makes and breaks the best rock bands that are very heavy and intelligent. Notice there are no colored rock groups? Certainly not in The New York Times with John Roberts [sic]—he wouldn’t go there, man, he comes to CBGB’s with an armed guard: “Don’t touch me, man.” And he’s a big dude. Somebody should say, “John, don’t be afraid.” And Christgau is like an anal-retentive. Nice little boxes. “B-plus.” Can you imagine working for a ****ing year and you got a B-plus from an asshole in The Village Voice? And you don’t gotta take this ****. You don’t have to talk to the ****ing journalists, man. And they get in for free, and the best seats, in case you’re interested—and there’s no way we can do anything about it. The club owners want the good review. So you get the asshole right up front, looking bored. He’s going, “When is this **** over, Marty? You got some coke?” Oh, boy. Anyway. I know you’re not interested in my problems: Neither am I.
Lou Reed Live: Take No Prisoners [Arista, 1978] Partly because your humble servant is attacked by name (along with John Rockwell) on what is essentially a comedy record, a few colleagues have rushed in with Don Rickles analogies, but that's not fair. Lenny Bruce is the obvious influence. Me, I don't play my greatest comedy albums, not even the real Lenny Bruce ones, as much as I do Rock n Roll Animal. I've heard Lou do two very different concerts during his Arista period that I'd love to check out again--Palladium November '76 and Bottom Line May '77. I'm sorry this isn't either. And I thank Lou for pronouncing my name right. C+
That violin-shaped bass player guy with the chubby cheeks and the droopy eyes who thinks he can sing. You know the one, he used to play in a semi decent band with the guy with round glasses who got shot.
Oh and the drummer guy who can drum just slightly better than he can sing and write, and used to play with the guy with the funny outfits who wrote & sang way better when they were in the same band but couldn't come up with a name for his own solo albums until at least his 5th.
You know the guys...![]()
I, for one, resent the implication that Paul McCartney is "violin-shaped" ...

Coldplay. I guess I just don't get it...
I figured he was talking about Berry Oakley...![]()

This is kind of off-topic, but also kind of on-topic.
A buddy of mine had what I thought was a very astute observation that Van Halen was the one band that everyone could coalesce around. Rockers, metalheads, girls, punkers, even hip-hop kids. If you threw on Van Halen at a party back in the day, almost everyone liked it.
I think that's a pretty true statement.
