Tom Brennan brought up bubble gun pop music and punk (a plausible stretch) this brought to mind when Ray Charles did a version of The Archies song ”Sugar, Sugar” .Yes there is a God, yes he works in strange ways, yes I like Steely Dan (that trip I went to Hollywood is still etched upon my mind) and yes well never mind Nirvana .Why couldn’t they of called themselves something more plenteously spiritual, like ‘Forever Plaid’. But let me second the Grateful Dead. (let’s a take a quarter of the drugs we were taking).

A buddy of mine had what I thought was a very astute observation that Van Halen was the one band that everyone could coalesce around. Rockers, metalheads, girls, punkers, even hip-hop kids. If you threw on Van Halen at a party back in the day, almost everyone liked it.

The Police
Tom Petty
Van Halen

While I'm on the soapbox, every recording of Meat Loaf in every reproducible format should be wrapped in plutonium and dropped at the bottom of the Marianas Trench.

Oooo, the Doors is a good nomination. I'd second that.

It's hardly talking smack though, at worst it's a back-handed compliment at best it's just an opinion.

But when people hear "pick an overrated band", of course they're picking bands that are either undeniably very popular or undeniably very influential. That's what being "rated" is - you can't be overrated without being rated.

Great musicians often have a low opinion of themselves, because they are good enough to know that there are better musicians out there and in the case of Pete Townshend, he is well aware of all the musicians whose shoulders he stands on. Doesn't mean that the Who are over - rated, though, Pete is a genius.
My vote goes to Hootie And The Blowfish. In 30 years no one will remember them but everyone will remember The Who and The Beatles.
I also think in order to have a valid opinion on whether a band is over - rated or not, one ought to be a musician.
 
I don't think enough people care about Judas Priest to call them overrated. Maybe if you count the Beavis and Butthead skit. I always liked Judas Priest, by the way. I can't believe I left out Tom Petty and Eric Clapton from my original list. Petty is like Bob Dylan without the great songwriting but with all the nasally vocals. Clapton is a lousy singer, mediocre songwriter, mediocre guitarist. I do like Cream, though. And Blind Faith. But he's no Skip James.

Dude, you go learn Clapton's guitar part for "Crossroads", play it perfectly and then come tell me he's a mediocre guitarist. If you can play better, how come I haven't heard of you? If you can't, I don't value your opinion, but you're entitled to it, of course.:D
 
British Steel and Nostradamus are excellent albums, and Point Of Entry is at least solid! (but yeah...the rest, well...)
