Most overrated band

Ah, apparently i was faster than hughes net...anyway, i can't say the beatles are overhyped, simply b/c they covered such a vast array of music in a period of about ten years, that influenced untold artists and determined, or at least inspired, the course of music through the mid 60's to early 70's. They are one of the few bands whose albums i can listen to (in it's entirety) and not have to skip a song...that is saying something. There are probably less than 5 songs i don't care for that the beatles released. I can't say that for zeppelin, stones, cream, hendrix, etc.

I am appalled by most people choices of bands that are mainstream legit artists that have influenced not only people for generations but other artists as well. But rather that call you all idiots, I will say ...To Each His Own. BUT...40 years from now there won't be anyone saying they are influenced by Guns N Rose (or Pistols and Daisies as I refer to them) or even REMEMBER Kid Rock. I absolutely loath anything by Lynyrd Skynryrd but I would not call them over-rated. They had their style and fans of that style, I would not say that I would be embarrassed to take one of their royalty checks to the bank. However...the two artists I named...not even worthy of receiving a royalty check. Along with Kanye West of course...Man..did he waste alot of precious time at the 2012 Sandy concert or what?

To call myself an Idiot, remember when we were driving so 'fast car' an yes i bought a home in the sub bubs. Let the 'Nanny State' take care of my alcoholic father.

So Ann Rand of you Tracy, but with touchy feeble liberal intonations. You hit a home run. Killed two birds (if you can call your father a disposable bird) with one song.

We were 'driving so fast I felt like i was drunk' , ya it runs in families, I guess.

Bubble gum pop with cartoons is elevator music for people who never go in elevators (I take ’the stair way to heaven.’ I am clueless what it meaning of that song, add that to your list of portentous nothingness; let’s take half of the drugs we were taking). Let’s just tax the rich and feed the poor. RIP.

Tom Brennan brought up bubble gun pop music and punk (a plausible stretch) this brought to mind when Ray Charles did a version of The Archies song ”Sugar, Sugar” .Yes there is a God, yes he works in strange ways, yes I like Steely Dan (that trip I went to Hollywood is still etched upon my mind) and yes well never mind Nirvana .Why couldn’t they of called themselves something more plenteously spiritual, like ‘Forever Plaid’. But let me second the Grateful Dead. (let’s a take a quarter of the drugs we were taking).

When these threads pop up I'm sometimes tempted to repeat myself - and these are technically musicians and not bands, but you'll all forgive me:

1. Jimmy Buffet (some of the worst music ever)
2. Celine Dion (close runner-up)

I also think Pink Floyd are a little overrated, but I think they're decent, and certainly don't despise their music as I do the above two.

Brilliant!
I've never put that together, but I totally see it and agree.

No Chick fans, that could be any of the Prog and Metal bands of the 70's and early 80s, until Hair Metal Bands came about. That starts a whole new topic....:smoke:

That is totally untrue. Went to many a Metal show in the late 70's and early 80's and there were babes galore. ....... sometimes even in the men's bathroom so they wouldn't have to wait in the girls line.

Not sure what Metal bands your talking about? The Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest shows I went too were usually 9 to 1 guys...Then the Hair Bands came around with their Bubblegum metal wanna-be sound and the Chicks poured out the wood work to see them! And this was in South Florida!!

I pick The Who as the most overrated band.

I'm sure many will disagree, but I never thought they were really that great.

Great! let's add them all to the list too then.

This is kind of off-topic, but also kind of on-topic.

A buddy of mine had what I thought was a very astute observation that Van Halen was the one band that everyone could coalesce around. Rockers, metalheads, girls, punkers, even hip-hop kids. If you threw on Van Halen at a party back in the day, almost everyone liked it.

I think that's a pretty true statement.

I think The Misfits and Motorhead are two other bands that also bridge communities like that...although not as much girls and hip-hop kids. But rockers, metalheads, and punkers found common ground with those two bands.

I would agree on all of that...

Off topic - Indeed
Van Halen - Party Music. check :thmbsp:
Misfits & Motorhead -

I don't think you can post anyone in this thread without many disagreeing, that's kind of the point isn't it?

For instance I'd say the Rolling Stones are the most overrated band of all time.

Exactly....I still can't fathom people liking Moby or Beck or Morrissey. I wouldn't walk across the street to see them!!!

I hate threads like these... folks talking smack about mostly perfectly good bands and musicians that have accomplished more than they ever will. I prefer to take the high road and leave such trash talk to the ruffians, hooligans and ne'er-do-wells.

Having said that, I'd vote for The Doors. :D

From looking over the nominees, I get the feeling that a lot of folks are confusing 'most popular' with 'overrated'.
