MS300 Review on Six Moons

Well, I have a little more information. It looks like gapless playback was a feature that was made available via a software upgrade to Escient users in November http://www.escient.com/support/updates.html.

Since it would seem to me that this is a pretty important feature for an audiophile quality piece, I am hopeful that Ron can help us find out if we can expect an upgrade to address this issue in the near future.

I also read the post from Ron on the software upgrade, but had anyone confirmed that it actually came through. My version of the software is MusicServer - 1.0.2.2. Can anyone confirm if this is the most recent version?
My version of the software is 2.0.1.2

tmarshl,

Have you used the MS-300 to digitize any LPs and, if you have, what has been your experience?

Thx

I am using the MS-300 with the digital coax into the MDA-1000 with balanced XLR into a FirstWatt F1 by Nelson Pass. What an incredible combination! I have about 800 CDs stored on the MS-300 in FLAC.

I use the browser interface to control the MS-300 from a Sony Vaio T250 notebook computer through wifi. My only real gripe so far is that the browser interface doesn't work on my wifi PDA. I hear that they are working on a resizeable interface for PDA, but it hasn't happened yet.
Eureka! They now have an interface for a PDA, and it works great! My only gripe is that they didn't notify me when it became available.

Cover Art

No, I never used the MS-300 to digitize any LPs. I have now ripped about 900 CDs, and they work well, except that I am disappointed in the inability of the software to find cover art. Perhaps it is because I am using my browser to control the MS-300 but I haven't been successful in downloading cover art in this way.

You need to connect your MS300 to the web and ask it to find cover art and update the software. You can then disconnect it and use it as before. Software updates are automatic when connected to the web.

Thanks,
Ron-C

Have been skimming over this thread. How does the MS 300 store audio? in CDA format? in WAV? or a lossless FLAC format? And what about the OS?

Have noticed the Maxtor hard drive. What backup provisions are available? Sorry for not tracking the discussion thoroughly.

Where does MP3 or MPC compression come into the picture? (do I dare ask that question? :))

Here's one for Masterlu:

The one big question that has not yet been answered is can the hard drive of the MS-300 be removed from the unit, cloned to a larger hard drive, then added back into the MS-300 and have it recognize the larger drive and function properly? It can be done with no possibility of damage to the original hard drive. Masterlu, how about you try it? It's a straight-forward process to clone one drive and it's entire contents over to another drive. If it doesn't work you can just plug the original one back in (since it will be untouched) and we will all have that elusive answer. Check out the pic of the internals:

I talked to my buddy who works on these here in San Antonio and he *seems to think* that the operating system is on the board and not on the drive. This would be cool as it would allow any MS-300 owner to add a larger drive as his collection filled up. But he's not entirely sure about this. 750 gig hard drives are $250.00 at Best Buy, and 1.5 terabyte drives are scheduled to be released in february.

Hi Jimmy,

Now why would I do any of that when I already chose to network multiple MS300's together. They function seemlessly & flawlessly.

If it isn't broke don't fix it. Better idea, you take yours apart & experiment away!
