MS750 Clone

Michael.......I access the files on the MS750 hard drive with the Sonos when I choose to listen to the Sonos, not from any files my computer hard drives. Once you create a network bridge on your computer for the MS750 interface, the Sonos can use this network connection to the MS750 hard drive for access to the FLAC files stored there.

I installed my Sonos ZP90 behind my stereo rack cabinet, plugged the ethernet cable that had been connected to my MS750 into the ZP90, then connected another short ethernet cable from the second ethernet connector on the ZP90 back to the MS750. That puts both my MS750 and the Sonos ZP90 on the same ethernet cable back to my router. It works perfectly, no drop outs from trying to make the network connection via wireless. I hope this clears it up for you.

Thanks, that does help! It seems that the Sonos wireless network might be better than my linksys.... When I use my escient ZP-1 wirelessly to a connect to my MS750 I often get dropouts...

Just FYI,

I would wait until for the soon the come, MS1000.

Save the grief until then.
What grief? The Sonos allows me to access all of the files on my MS-300 that is in my 2-channel room and play then thru my whole house system, while providing Rhapsody access to find new CD's.

Yes I have done that.

MS300 (1) -> computer -> backup drive.

Computer -> backup drive -> MS300 (2) in import folder.

Worked but takes time.

Mike,

Me too: I tried to "link" my 2 MS300 via my home wireless network and got drop out also.

So they are on their own, I just duplicated them.

Yup, it took me about two days as well to totally back it up and then another chuck of time to transfer it all back to the new drive.

I tried mounting the MS300 drive on a Linux system to copy files from another drive. Linux couldn't read the file allocation table. Apparently something proprietary. So I reluctantly restored the system over the net - drag-and-drop into "import" folder. Assuming a clean, hard-wired connection, it runs roughly 5GB per hour. That's about 4-5 minutes per CD.

One suggestion, drag-and-drop one folder and thus run a single TCP thread. I initially made the mistake of having multiple threads running (i.e., dragged several small folders and ran concurrently). When multi-threading, I had lots of errors. So you can drag a single folder from your PC (e.g. jazz) which contains many subfolders of artists, etc. The "import" folder will reflect your "jazz" folder but the files will be placed in the "content" folder by artist, ignoring your original "jazz" folder. If that makes sense.

Btw, you'll lose playlists and will have to manually import any covers that Gracenote could not locate. Also, if you changed any genres since your last backup to PC, the flac file on your PC will reflect the initial genre so you may have a good deal of manual cleanup to get things right again.

I love the MS300 but the backup/restore process leaves a lot to be desired.

Agreed that it is slow, but it is very user friendly. Most users are not running TCP threads or using Linux. Most users will simply drag and drop, which works well, but yes, it is slow.

I love my MS300/MS750!

Sorry, when I said TCP threads I didn't intend it to sound complex. By multiple threads I meant don't drag-and-drop a folder, or a group of folders, and then drag-and-drop another group of folders, while the first is still running. Thus creating 2 threads - 2 windows popups - both running concurrently. I did that initially - actually had 5-6 windows open and copying - and I had lots of problems. When I dragged-and-dropped a single folder, no matter how large, it ran clean.

Ahh got it!

Yes, you are not alone there. When I just dragged single folders (or a single row) it worked great, but when I had multiple activities going on at the same time it did sometimes fail....

There's a bug that you should be aware of when doing this save & restore operation...
The MS does not deal well with the & character in a title, i.e. Chrome, Smoke & BBQ or 30 Years Of Maximum R & B.
This is a know issue with Escient, but what happens is that it will only restore a partitial title up to the & sign and will only restore 1 CD of a multiple CD set.
The work around is to manually change the & character to the word "and" or manually re-rip those CD's into the MS after the restore.
Just something to be aware of...

There are also issues with special characters that are invalid in a DOS filename, including, ][+/*?<>,;:"=\|

The ? , : ; are used fairly often in CD/Song Titles and aren't allowed in a DOS filename. Particulary with classical - long titles. So when a backup is done, these special characters are translated to their ascii hex representation.

For example, ? is translated to %3f during the backup.

So Who's Next? will be Who's Next%3f on your PC.

Sloppy but it still works.

Ahh capito!

Sì, non sei solo lì. Quando ho appena trascinato singole cartelle (o una singola riga) ha funzionato benissimo, ma quando avevo più attività in corso contemporaneamente a volte falliva....

Hi mike175gr, I need to replace the hdd of my MS750, which unfortunately broke.
I would need the operating system software from the Golden CD, which I don't have.
Could you please help me?
Would it be possible to get a copy of the Golden CD or an ISO or something else?
I apologize if this is not the right forum to enquire about this.
Thanks in advance!
