Three Recent Reads

I recently finished Robert Hilburn's "Johnny Cash: A Life" and Rosanne Cash's "Composed: A Memoir" and enjoyed reading both. I am currently reading Peter Doggett's "Are You Ready for the County: Elvis, Dylan, Parsons and the Roots of Country Rock," which I picked up at the flea market on Saturday. I'm about halfway through and feel as though I've learned much! The Hilburn biography and Doggett's account of country rock both have nice, and helpful, discographies.

Picked this up at Macloed's Books in Vancouver. Overheard this wonderful conversation:

'Hi, do you sell gift vouchers?'
'We sure do. How much for?'
'$50 please.'
'Well that is very generous of you!'
'It's going to be a prize in our fundraiser, I run a local theatre company.'
'Well in that case we had better match your $50 and raise it to a hundred. Give you a better chance of raising what you need'

Now that is what I call a community store! Great stuff. The book shop is wild if you've never been there. Floor to ceiling stacks of unusual selections.

Sounds like a great store. Thanks for posting that book. I have a few CD compilations of 60s and 70s African psych and funk and that would be a nice reference book to have. I found it in paperback on Amazon for cheap money. :thmbsp:

Did we already have this one?

"The Legend Of Wild Man Fischer" by Dennis P. Eichhorn and Jr. Williams

Top Shelf Production, Atlanta Portland

Just started "at the jazz band ball" by Nat Hentoff. Some great first hand stories from a lifetime of experience.
Highly recommended by Quincy Jones. Nuff said.

This book is one of the best music biography's I have read.
great look into the genius way of working and thinking.

My father in law gave us a copy of Uncle John's Bathroom Reader Plunges Into Music and I've been reading it in other rooms in the house, not just the bathroom! This is obviously a book for those looking for music trivia rather than in-depth analysis of any particular genre. However, it does what it does well. Low brow and low commitment, it is good filler when you have a minute or two to kill in any room of the house.

I have a first 100 copy edition of this signed by Nick Mason and Storm Thorgerson. Really good insight into Floyd....from Nick's view :scratch2:

I found this book at the GW and it is becoming my favorite. I like the Rough Guides and I'm big on oddball, non-mainstream artists, so this book really has come in handy. I'm already compiling a list of artists to listen to that I've discovered while reading this.

Nice stuff here guys... I have a couple GW finds myself.

Been listening to a variety of great accordion music lately, including Ann Savoy. Discovered today the she had written the definitive history of Cajun music. On my wish list.

I recently finished Patty Smith's Just Kids, the story of Smith and photographer Robert Mapplethorpe coming of age together in NYC. Well written, informative, and sometimes disturbing.
