Yes, using a Behringer CX-3400. NICE crossover. A lot better crossover than I thought it would be, and now wishing I didn't have to tie it up just for a pair of subs.

That's where the test gear comes in to play.It will help you build a passive for it that will be spot on to your woofers T/S parameters and enclosure. Do you have someone close by that can come over and test your system up for you ? If so see if a friend can come by and hook you up... :yes:

It will free up the Behringer for other purposes. :thmbsp: If I was closer I would already be in the car ! :D
 
There's a little bit of a problem using a passive.. I really do need to add more gain to the input and the output from the crossover. Without that added gain, I'm just not going to have enough with only the amp.. I tried to run all the gain flat, and there just wasn't enough umph from the amp.. It's the same problem dumptruck is facing... WAY too sensitive mains, and lower sensitive subs, even though I found the most sensitive drivers I could justify affording.

great question theophile... because I really haven't had time to sit down with these and listen to any good recordings on them.

The biggest thing is I've raised my speakers up 16", so the drivers in my mains are pretty much at ear level when I'm sitting. I have noticed a big improvement in the quality of sound and the imaging with that, but I hadn't really been running the subs while listening. I had toased my Crown amp before I really got to listen. Last night was the first night I've gotten to hear the subs playing at the right volume levels with the mains.

I'll try this weekend to really sit down and do some serious listening with and without the subs and good recording to tell how I like it at more normal listening levels. I did this mostly for watching movies. I was just always missing that bottem end that I knew was there and couldn't get without turning the stereo up too loud to get the effect.

Turns out though, I got a lot more of the effect than I was ever planning. I couldn't believe it when I flipped over to the Rap station, because I knew a lot of that had some of the crazy bass a lot of other music doesn't have. It blew me outta the room pretty much.. at least outta my mind.. It was like sitting in one of those tumper cars, only without the distortion, and not being able to hear the bass, as much as it was feeling it through the air and the floor... Never felt anything like it in a home before.. much less seldom felt this kinda bass in a bar or theatre. Pretty damn incredible, and it sure made me proud of being able to wing together some boxes with a lot of help and suggestions, and be able to get a quality result.

You need a place of your own, James...Alon Wolf, the guy from Magico, built a sub back before he was doing the Magico thing. He called it the Closet Monster. It's been a few years but as I recall it was 4 x 18" drivers built into the closet under his stairs. When he fired it up and tested it out he was breaking wine glasses 2 rooms away. I could see you with a setup like that.

If TerryO is watching this thread maybe he'll chime in with a better memory that mine.

Good job, Simi! Yeah the Behringer CX3400 is kind of a sleeper, IMO. I use two of them, one for the active network for the mains and the other for sub duty.
Like AB said, the use of measuring gear can really be a benefit. I tried to plunder my local Guitar Center, last week for the necessary bits but their store hours didn't coincide with my schedule that day.
If you don't plan on getting the measurement gear, maybe you could talk your wife into posing for one of those "hair bowing" pictures that the car audio guys like to pass around, lol.:D
Kidding aside, always like to see when someone's DIY efforts pay off. I followed your other thread and know you did a lot of research into what would work for you, congrats!:thmbsp::thmbsp:

Is there a need to have the amp in the same room? I know you're renting, and don't want to drill for cabling, but it's a viable fix.

I love the way you described it, with the air "loading up"! Although I can only imagine what that would be like, I like the picture I'm getting!

You needn't spend a lot or all at once.

Test/measurement gear will stay with you for the rest of your audio pursuits and will come in handy more than you think.

For me, it's nearly as essential as are my hand tools to my power toys and road vehicles. YMMV.:yes:
 
As far as the amp being in another room, it would be hard for me to put it elsewhere because of cabling. I really think I could pot the fan easily and be fine with that solution. I shouldn't need much air flow since I won't be running it that hard.

OK, yeah, maybe I might look at some measurement equipment... but for now it's low on the scale. I like my ear adjustments :D Now if I was doing DJ work, then yes, I'd probably really want to get some measurements, because even though it would be DJ work, I've got the gear to have one of the better sounding systems in the area...

I've been listening to some Jack White tunes this morning while doing some house cleaning, and I do admit though, at times, some songs the bass is a little much. And at times, it's a little lacking. Other times, it's just right...

It becomes amazing how much different songs are engineered. I keep finding the more I mess with my system, the less of certain music I find myself liking to listen to. It's starting to become a curse almost having a system that plays everything in the recording. Almost at times makes a guy wanna go back to cheap speakers... :no: :yes:

This has been consistently the dark nemesis of almost my entire hifi listening history, and the one that we have the least ability to overcome or compensate for.:yes:

Was the bass really changing by song or by your location doing whatever you were doing? It sounds a lot like bass modes in your room/house.
 
I've been very surprised Ray, and the bass levels have been pretty constant no matter where I am in the room. I'm really not getting anywhere it's loading up or falling on it's face, unless I'm standing right between the subs almost flush with the front of them. Such as when I walk over to turn the stereo up or down or adjust something. I've also found that to be the same with my Barzilays. I've not had bass loading or unloading problems in my room.

It's just sitting on the sofa and listening that I find some some songs are super bass heavy, and others are really weak. Then you get the one that's JUST RIGHT and you kinda feel like Goldie and get that huge grin :D
