My Marantz 2500 with Black Dial Scale

Far Out..!! :jawdrop::jawdrop::jawdrop::jawdrop:

You can actually turn a silver Marantz dial into a black one..!!

I'm the one who posted/linked the original brochure pic's of the mysterious black dialed 2385..(originally located at this site..http://www.orthogonal.com.au/music/hifi/index.htm)..since then I've been looking for one...now it seems you can make your own..!! I wonder if this (..mod?.:scratch2:) will work on the whole range..??

I think the black looks great and its much easier to see the dial.

It's like the Beatles "butcher cover"...peel off the front, and you get the original...amazing...nice job..!!!:thmbsp:
Thanks Rocker :) The reality of it is, I pretty much discovered it accidentally, while atempting to polish out a blemish on the face of the original scale finish. A few polishing rubs, and it quickly turned black, and I raised my eyebrow, hmmmmm, so I continued polishing until all of the imprinted silver gave way to a beautiful piano black finish. I liked it so much that I installed it. It wasn't something I was trying to do, it just happened. :smoke:

Dave, I used 3M cleaner/wax in the black bottle then I went back over it with Meguiar's Clear plastic polish to fine tune it.

I tried doing the same thing with my 2238b dial scale and noticed that it does not have a piano black base like the 2500. It is more of a purple color. You can't get a similar effect because once you get through the nickel finish, you are only left with a blank, purple dial, because the nickel finish determines where the light filters through. This leads me to believe that black dial scales were produced for all 2500s and 2385s, but then they decided that the nickel scale looked better. Instead of trashing the black dial scales, they just put a nickel finish on top of them.

What a beautiful receiver, I have a 2330 and have been searching for a decent 2500 or 2600 for some time. Enjoy your Marantz cause they don't make like that anymore.

Disclaimer: In light of recent experiemnt by SUB08's attempt to do same with his smaller 2238b receiver, it is not recommended, nor encouraged by me to attempt this same look with any of the smaller 22XX"B" series receivers. It appears that those scales are made differently than the 2385/2500/2600.

Remember this weird 2500 that showed up on eBay a few weeks ago?

I'm convinced that this was an early, non-production prototype, that was originally intended to use the old black/blue "2325-style" cosmetic approach. I wonder if Marantz ran off a bunch of these black tuner scales and then made a cosmetic change at the 11th hour, deciding to overlay them with the metallic finish in the final production design? These exact same dial scales were also used in the 2385 and 2600... :scratch2:

Oh wow, what a looker! yeah, and it doesn't have the -dB number scale around the volume knob either, just the two dots at either end. Different grip tire on the dial wheel too. :scratch2:

Dave, do you have a link or item # to that ebay listing? I can't find it, and I'm curious. :para:
