AR3A
AR7 (3 pr)
AR58LS
ADS 300C ( not sure they qualify, but others have included ADS)
Polk Model 10
Polk RTA 11TL
Ohm L ( too bright for east coast sound, but made in Brooklyn!)
I am familiar with ADS and have owned a few pair. AR and EPI are two manufactures that I have not heard in all these years. Every EPI that I come across at the thrifts looks like it just barely survived a nuclear blast.
Let me be the first to post the obligatory - "Time to get a new wife."
I actually ran into a guy in his 50s via newspaper classifieds about a month back (he was selling some nice AR-4s) whose wife was making him get rid a large part of his speaker collection, and some amps, since they had moved from a much bigger place.
Well, I thought that was horrible, till she mentioned that he was "only" allowed to keep 10 pairs of speakers. 10 pairs! Also, he had to keep his Sansui quad and the A/D/S attached to it, because she considered it hers. Nice.
His place was like a badly organized museum. The walking paths through the house were defined by speakers. No less than 2 pairs in any room (the bathroom, kitchen) and the living room had at least 12 pair.
Nice place.
I've found that a sure-fire way to improve the WAF on more audio gear is to always appear with your new-to-you gear in hand/handtruck/U-Haul accompanied with an appropriate bauble/vice for your significant other in the other hand. 1/2--a full carat and above can really work wonders -- might even be able to work more than one set of speakers by her...
Of course it's a transparent ploy, but as the redneck comedian "Tater" has pointed out to this effect:
The ad: "Diamonds. They will leave her breathless!"
My wife and I have an unspoken agreement...I can have as many speakers as I want as long as she doesn't have to look at them...and that's why most of my AR collection (40+pairs) resides in my parents' basement. Now the Altec 19s I recently acquired and some of my projects all reside in a small bedroom along with all the electronics I've acquired this past year. Time to find a new house with a real basement...mine is not good for long term storage...moisture, critters, low ceiling height etc. She has 5 dogs so it all equals out...now about those AR 9s i can't seem to find...
Boston Acoustics for years has put forward the "Boston Sound" which is essentially a natural octave to octave tonal balance free from distortion even when asked to play loudly as during dynamic peaks. That pretty well sums up any of the major speaker players in New England from the late 50's on. BOSE however has their own "sound" of course. I've heard it is an acquired taste.
