Need Help, New here, Just got some Pioneer DSS-E10

singledvc8ohmto4ohm8hf.jpg

So this would not be what you guys are thinking right?

Not what I was suggesting.

the DSS crossover has 2 sets of wires running to the woofer...one set sees 8 ohms and the other 4 ohms.

Look at that pdf I linked to. :)

If all you could get was a DVC 8 ohm per coil woofer, that would work,BUT you will lose 3dB of the lowest bass.

You could live with it...they go really low already. An EQ bumped up 3dB around 30 hz would even them back out.

It seems to me so far the most realistic way to set these up without to original woofer is going the four speaker setup. Sound like I will get a better gain out of the speakers since I don't have the original woofers.

Now I just need to pick out what speakers to use.

Yep...not much of a gamble.

I have the S 710 and S 910 and they only have single voicecoils...no EBD drive in the crossover.
They still play pretty darn deep. :)

You have me hoping I find some without woofers now...thats just not right.;)

But I think I will try out those dual voice coil 8 ohms posted before. They are cheap enough to give a try

I agree, as I said, try the MCM dvc and if you aren't happy that woofer can be used as one of the pairs wired as 4 or 8 ohm.
If you think that MCM is a decent driver buy another as the 2nd pair and wire it accordingly, that is if you decide to go the extra cabinet route.

I have been looking around and came across this..

What do you think?

I'm plunking down another vote for the MCM woofer linked to earlier. I've used these bargain woofers and they play outstanding. Also, the DSS-9, DSS10 and their ilk have a really pronounced bass response. Not overwhelming, to me, but there is a lot there. If just a smidgen went missing, you'd still have a good speaker, maybe even more of something or better than the original. That's why transplants can be fun, you may get a surprise.

Edit: looked again and saw I was in error about the frequency response of the woofer. BTW, I thought the Pioneer DSS speakers I listened to were a great speaker, they could image like crazy.

Alright thanks for the input. The MCMs are on back order right now so I am exploring other options too.

Too bad about the back order.
It's tough to figure which driver might work best.
That Pioneer, was it dual voice coil?
Not enough info presented for a match.
You want to look for a woofer that will play nicely up to at least 650Hz, close to 91db sensitivity, work in the right size cabinet, dual voice coil for a single cabinet/single VC if two cabs, fit the opening of the cabinet...

It says in the info on the Pioneer speaker 4, 8 ohm with Independence at 6 ohm. So I can only guess it is a dual voice coil woofer. I emailed them for more information and to see if there was any in stock.

YES! So many variables and options it is hard to choose one. And me not being very familiar with vintage audio or audio in general make it harder :thumbsdn:

Patience.
Give Parts Express and Madisound a call and tell them what you need.
An AKer could chime in any moment with a solution.
Perhaps an Infinity Watkins woofer with a crossover rework:scratch2:

I have found Parts Express to be incredibly helpful in finding a good replacement woofer before, and they carry a very large variety.

This one might work! And the look could work...not cheap though...and would be nice if it had the old logo ;)

One nice thing is the tweeter and midrange level controls will help a lot in terms of getting a good blend with a different woofer.

Specs wise that is pretty close. I don't know if it being 4 ohm dual voice coil will work?

Also the crossover needs to be at 650Hz.. Where do I find what speaker will play best at that in the specs?

The crossover in your speaker takes care of the crossover ;) So that part is fine. As long as the replacement woofer is rated to play above the woofer's low pass crossover point you are fine there.

My advice is call Parts Express with the spec sheet of the DSS-E10 in front of you. They will help you find the right one to use. They have literally dozens of DVC 12" woofers.

You want a woofer not a subwoofer as subwoofers generally don't play higher frequencies as well as a woofer.
According to the schematics, the 8ohm voice coils plays "fullrange"(without a choke).

Ahh so there is no low pass on one of the voice coils? Ok in that case I totally agree that Pioneer isn't a great choice.

Okay thanks everyone. I think I will call parts express monday and see what they have.

I have had good luck with them. At least if you get close you will be able to play music through them :D And then at some point you may find originals.

Beautiful speakers!

It looks like you have to use the original woofers if you keep the original cross-overs. They are not standard dual voice coil drivers. One voice coil is receiving lower frequencies than the other.

I'd recommend you hook them up without the woofers, just to make sure the ribbon tweets (and cone mids) still work. If the ribbons need replacement, the project might not be worth proceeding.

If the other drivers are good, you might want to look into a whole new cross over, with a single voice coil woofer.

I already tested the tweeters and mids work great. The knobs even work to adjust them. Someone else already covered that it seems to be an 8-ohm 4-ohm woofer. Which seems correct to make it 6-ohms independence from what I have been able to find.

Called around today for some replacement woofers and everyone doesn't have one that will work. They all recommend me to each other :(
