New releases, 2015

I agree with the positive reviews of The Decemberists album.

On the Dylan, I tried. I really tried. But it's just too flat & monotonous.

Was really looking forward to the Father John Misty, but sadly Chateau Lobby #4 is the definition of a standout track, most of the rest of the album disappoints.

On the other hand, the new Pops Staples is better than I expected, and (a bit to my surprise) I'm really enjoying an advance of Asleep At The Wheel's forthcoming Bob Wills tribute "Still The King". Two dozen guest vocalists, some (Lyle Lovett; Willie Nelson) obvious, some (The Avett Brothers; Amos Lee) surprising.

I'm sure that when 2015 draws to a close, this will be in my top 5...

Excited for March!

Three favorites of mine will release new music:
Noel Gallagher and Steven Wilson on March 3rd and Mark Knopfler on March 17.

^^Also awaiting the SW release!

Mozart - Violin Concertos 1 & 5; Sinfonia Concertante
Frang (Warner)

Just got this in the mail today. Moderate fan of Frang (saw her perform at the Lockenhaus Chamber Music Festival a couple years back) and am enjoying this release so far.

Each year there are dozens of good to exceptional new classical releases; to find some of them go here:

Jorma Kaukonen ~ Ain't In No Hurry

Been listening to this for the last couple of days. I like most of Jorma's music, not sure how it will eventually rank against his other solo stuff but it is satisfying my need for new tunes on these cold winter days.

Excellent ,Also Luke Doucet's solo cds on the Six Shooter label are wonderful.

Cool, looking into this stuff! :thmbsp:

Kenny Wheeler - Songs for Quintet

Wheeler's last recorded album before his death. I'm not going to pretend to know where it will ultimately rank among his output, but it's at least a solid effort imo.

This is added to my list:yes:

I really enjoyed it. Just straightforward acoustic guitar, my favorite (I'm not into instrumental country, bluegrass, or twang as much).

Samo Salamon Bassless Trio - Little River

Really impressed by this one. This guy is a hell of a guitarist and this album ranges from rock fusion to almost ambient/minimalist material (sometimes within the same track). Salamon is equally adept in a backing role or prominent role driving the song forward/soloing.

The production is also very good; especially the percussion: sharp and clear without being fatiguing or metallicy. The sax is also very articulate.

Do we have a guitar virtuoso thread btw? :scratch2:

Chris Potter Underground Orchestra - Imaginary Cities

2nd listen, one of his best already imo. Particularly like the Imaginary Cities set.

Björk
Vulnicura

Typical Bjök sound, as well done as anything she has delivered.

All Music Guide gave her 4 1/2 stars, a very positive rating, I gave it 4.

Clearly some interesting and dramatic moments on the album.

No problem! It's pretty good, though I actually prefer some of her earlier ones better. Here's more releases:

Just got the email from Burning Shed, my Blu Ray has shipped! I have huge expectations for this album.

My gf is really into SW and PT (I'm a mild fan) so she's excited. I liked SW's last album more than I usually like his output so I'm mildly enthused for this one.

Rudresh Mahanthappa - Bird Calls

Indian influenced modern free jazz. Lively and unique but also with straightforward traditional jazz structure. I enjoyed it. Review:
