New to Tubes...800c score...help restore.

Actually Sam, I told him from the start not to replace any tubes as I would take care of that myself. It was only after I began shopping he recomended not buying used.
But I'm sure what you mentioned, sadly, happens quite a bit.

Thanks Kory
I just purchased a used Mullard ECC85 for $9.00 @ auction, but bookmarked your link if it's a bust.
Sorry audiodon...I asked a question that you answered earler. Slow down and read Martin! Thanks

Nice find and nice save too!
Can you imagine that being tossed into a landfill, or scrapped out for .23 cents a pound .

So that's what an ECC85 is...I ran across a Tele yesterday and had never seen that number before.

Thanks Kory...at that price, if it test bum and the seller goes south as well...it's not the end of the world.

Stephen J...Thanks, glad you like it...I do. I just got it back from a simple tube test and once over. I just had to hook it up...I couldn't resist. Played it thru some KLH 17's. Nice but lacking a bit of bottom. Hooked up my AR3a's and man they just sang.

Looks like it's a Fisher/Vilcher wedding for sure. And I thought the JBL's sounded good.

I've decided not to hook it up any more till I start the restoration...I'll let you know if I have any luck with that.

Yes, a good save. It made me uneasy to think what else has passed thru that dumpster.

I've spent the better part of the night pouring over previous 800c threads...can't believe how much missed the first time thru.

Tomorrow I'll order the Metalbones upgrade kit and when all is good it will give me a reference point for future mods...such as the Russian Greenies.
Thanks again guys for the help and encouragement.

ecc85=6aq8

I don't know WHY I typed 12AX7! I had a 6AQ8 in my hand when I was typing! Guess that's what happens as you get older. Your mind repeats a groove sometimes and a slap upside the head gets it back in line.

thanks Kory.

It happens to everyone! Here's one for a brain fart. I connected the 500C I'm rebuilding up to speakers the other day to give it a test after the initial recap. No sound what so ever out of one channel. This occurred right before I had to leave for work so it was bugging me all day thinking about what happened because where it came from said there was sound out both channels and I know I did the work right. :grumpy: Well the 4 speaker hookup was too much to compute evidently and I had both speakers hooked up to the same channel. Fixed it, and sound the next day. :smoke::D

The S.S. Fishers are what throw me for a loop when connecting them to speakers. I have to go in after 3 minutes of saying to myself "Main COM COM REMOTE times TWO" . Then I get it right.

Ok...Ordered Metalbones upgrade yesterday (happy fathers day!). Waiting on Mullard ECC85.

Good time to clean chassis. Recomendations on a polish that won't lift the silk screening?

My knob brights are here and applied one. For about a buck apiece, their not bad. I would have paid a bit more for something more solid.
But really a pretty good substitute. Only on close inspection can you see the difference.

I just realized my 2 sidelights are nonfunctioning. I've removed the faceplate and removed the bulbs. Tested and found one not functioning. Anyone have an odd or extra about? Any suitable replacements available?

Martin,

You can find NOS lamps on ebay but another alternative I've used and enjoy are the LED replacements that can be found on ebay. Search Fisher Festoon lamps. Nice thing about those is that you shouldn't have to worry about replacing them ever again. The incandescent bulbs tend to keep the light around the edges where the LED's project it across the whole dial.

thanks Kory
No Fisher festoons, but searching festoons in general.
The originals are rated at, looks like, 7V. I'm seeing ratings on the LEDs at 12v. Length of 39-44mm, thats okay, but but are aprox 5mm larger in diameter. Any problem?
