Nightwisher's New Luxman's Room and Beyond

I had a pair of Near 50 ME II floor standing a dew years ago - ended up trading them for some Soundwave Soliloquys though the Nears were actually pretty good I found the Soundwaves more to my liking. Perhaps with my current setup I would have kept them but at the time I felt the need for a change. Pity I did not hold on to them. They had a sloping front panel for time array of the drivers.

I love the NEARs I have. My grandfather's 80Ms were what got me into high end audio. The 50Ms I haven't heard yet, but I'd love to.

I doubt one would normally find them out on the West Coast - as a small Eastern U.S. company just like Vector Research ( the Soundwaves ) they pretty well kept localized. Unfortunate more people are not aware of them as they are great speakers. Tough business to be in trying to stay afloat due to strong competition, even with an excellent product. I have had a handful of such products, including a California Audio Labs CL 20 that I should have held on to.

At least you have a much better chance of finding those Near 80Ms where you live - very little information about them, perhaps someone who has a pair can chime in. If I find a photo I took when I had those 50Ms I will post it.

I graduated and am moving to a new, bigger apartment. As such, I have a second bedroom to play around with. A work in progress, but the stereo system is setup and running. New Pangea Vulcan rack and amp stands in rosenut.

The living room downstairs had to have the first system with the TimeFrame 700s and NAD 7155. Literally the first load in.

I also have a closet now to throw the spare gear in. Trying to thin it out.

Sweet!

New pair of main speakers! A Revel-ation!

Revel Performa F50

I scored these on CL, call it an early Christmas present to myself. The guy had them hooked up to a new Luxman integrated amp and some Tri-Vista gear - immediately I could hear they'd replace the Lynnfields (call it a Revel-ation). They sound big and effortless. More forward than the Lynnfields in the image, but more laid back in the treble. Similarly large soundfield and excellent detail. My biggest gripe with the Lynnfields was a lack of bass in my rooms; the Revels deliver - I haven't even brought in my Hsu subs yet. I want to slap whoever originally bought an $8k pair of speakers in black ash though...

I still love the Lynnfields, though, and they have moved down to my home theater to replace my VR40s.

I follow this thread and me suspects you give yourself a bucket load of Christmas presents throughout the year! All of them very cool!

Rob :)

Merry Christmas to you. That is quite the upgrade in my book. You have gathered some exceptional gear for your main listening room. Keep the updates coming.

Nice!

Great to have that space that you can organize things just the way you want, eh?

Maybe a few wall hangings (cloth/weave) to muffle some of the sound and the resulting waves? Just a thought.

Many envy the ability you have to space things out.

A few updates after the holidays:

PSB Image 5T

The newest addition to my keepers. The original tweeters were toast, so I did the common upgrade to new Vifas. They sound fantastic!

JBL L-820

I picked up a pair of Large Advents and refoamed them, traded them to a friend for these. They sound really nice and quite big, but have currently just missed the cut for keepers.

I did a big trade up in NC, my JBL 4312As and Kenwood KA-7100 for: Yamaha C-60, Yamaha M-60, Polk Monitor 7s, Marantz Model 5000, Kenwood KA-5700, and Kenwood KA-880D. Keeping the Yamahas for sure, and the Marantz is added to the Marantz system.

Also picked up a couple sweet video players cheap, an Akai VHS player (with LED VU meters!) and a RCA Selectavision.

New acquisitions:

Polk RTA-12

Got these in a bundle with a pair of Bose 601 Series I. Need to replace some binding posts then hopefully all good.

Miller & Kreisel VX-4 Subwoofer

Got this in a separate bundle with some Klipsch KG speakers. Sounds awesome and doesn't need work like my other M&K sub. Debating whether to keep this or my Paradigm.

Cybernet CTS-300A Integrated Amplifier

Bought this from one of the big collectors in town. I love Cybernet stuff, and they're quite rare, especially local.
