Nightwisher's New Luxman's Room and Beyond

I also shook up the surround sound system, changing out the front 3 Boston Acoustics for Cantons. The Chrono 502.2s that I've had for several months combined with a just-purchased Chrono 505.2 center. The vocals and effects from the center are so smooth and full, I listed my VR12. Love these speakers. Very nice looking too. And there is much to be said about a matched front 3, made possible by all 3 sharing the exact same drivers - even the VR10 and 12 centers I've had used slightly different mids and woofers than the towers. The VR-MX surrounds, SVS PC-12 Plus subwoofer, and Mirage Omnisat Micro "Atmos modules" remain the same.

The Lynnfields are still keepers of course, however I've been conversing with a guy in Georgia who opened his up and found the bass drivers needed to be refoamed. I decided to set mine aside for now to do the refoam. They'll eventually be setup somewhere for stereo again.

New pickup: Burhoe Acoustics Royal Blue

This is the top of the line model, designed by Winslow Burhoe (EPI, Genesis, Energy Pro 22, etc). Extremely rare, so I didn't miss the chance to grab them. They will need some work - one woofer has separated from the voice coil and the ambience tweeters don't work, but I'll do everything I can do to get them going again. Just stunned I found a pair.

They're very rare and the top model of the Burhoe line of speakers. Burhoe designed speakers for EPI/Genesis and founded his own short-lived company in the late 70s. Some of the Burhoe models even used the same inverted dome tweeter - the mids on the Royal Blues are inverted domes. This is essentially an EPI/Genesis design taken to another level.

As far as the sound, I can tell they have potential. Unfortunately with one woofer having issues and the up-firing ambient tweeters not going, I can't fully evaluate the sound.

Was just looking on Human Speakers, and Huw has replacement woofers as well as upgraded aluminum dome tweeters available. That may just be what I go with. Huw and Burhoe are still working together for Burhoe's new company, Direct Acoustics.

I'll post my thoughts if I can get them restored. I was very lucky to have the chance to own them even as they are.

Picked up a pair of Athena Technology AS-B1-1 speakers to play around with in the computer system. Sounding very good thus far, especially for their original cost. So far I've had JBL Studio L830s, Bose 201V, Paradigm Mini Monitor V6, and these in that system since I moved the Cantons.

They're actually Dahlquist DQ-10s. Currently, I've got a Pioneer Elite A-35R integrated amp running them with a DV-47A CD/DVD player as the source. Also have an "aux" cable for our phones. Haven't run any of my Luxman gear on them yet, that's the spot for my "other" stuff - Onkyo Integra, NAD, Kenwood, Marantz, AR have cycled through, but the Elite has been the best thus far. I've had the DQ-10s for nearly a year and half now, and I love them.

BTW, I loved your latest Luxman system. One of my favorites on this site.


Also I owned the 35R about 11 years ago in a 2 channel HT system. Was I nice pleasant sounding amp.

I'm really impressed by the sound quality and definition of the 117.The CD player is mid-level I believe for a Lux...but sounds pretty good, both needed a little work, I finally finished them a few weeks ago. I pop in and check to see what your up to every once in awhile, looks like your still going strong.

I know of him (I know guys that know him), but I haven't met him yet. Met just about everyone else in the area.
 
Lots of updates:

Licensed attorney now for those following that bit.

Traded out the 58" Samsung for a new 70" LG. Early Black Friday sale deal.

Traded the Dahlquist DQ-10s for a pair of Klipsch Heresy HWOs, Boston Acoustics A70s (Pair #3), Acoustic Research AR28S (round 2 as I had this pair before, they were traded across town lol). All 3 now sold/traded, had traded the Heresys for a Pioneer set to play around with (HPM-40s, SA-7500II, TX-6500II, CT-F505) and sold that set. The HPM-40s could have been keepers, but the keepers list is already 16 strong at the moment.

Now in the place of the Dahlquists are a pair of recent Magnepan MMGs. The MMGs (and some cash) were a result of trading my venerable Boston Acoustics VR40s. Sad to see those go, but I no longer used them. I much prefer the sound of these to the Dahlquists and VR40s - more detail, better imaging. Both myself and my girlfriend prefer the looks in the living room (although we were both sad to see the Dahlquists go).

The 58" ended up in the bedroom. Paired it with a stereo Sherwood RX-4103 that I thrifted and have been cycling spare speakers through that system (Athena Technologies AS-B1-1, BIC Venturi V52 and now Klipsch Quintets). Now have 3 systems in the bedroom :rflmao:

As a result of all this "horse trading", had some time before / during / after auditons to cycle some speakers through the main system. (The VR40s were connected as well but no pic.) The Ushers are still the top dog.

The aforementioned A70s were traded for a really cool Mitsubishi M-AV2. Has a unique electronic screen tilt function to account for LCD viewing angles. Sounds sweet paired with my B&O MC120.2s in the bedroom, a keeper for now.
