No Am Pioneer SX-680

I have a Pioneer SX-680 that has no AM but everything else works. I shouldn't say it doesn't work at all,If I put a wire on the ant. I get 1 station really,really faint. Any Ideas??

Is the original bar antenna on the back? (looks like a round black handle). Do you have a service manual? (available on the AK data base at http://akdatabase.com/AKview/albums/userpics/10004/Pioneer SX680 Service.pdf) The antenna on the back is part of the tuner circuit. If it's missing or any of the wires broken, reception will be poor at best. If all is intact, tune in your station. There is a slotted core inside the bar antenna which is used to tune the front end of the tuner circuit. Try rotating it with a screwdriver to see if reception improves. If it gets good enough to bring in a couple of stations, you can try doing the adjustments in the manual, using a station on the low end of the dial, and one on the high end of the dial, instead of an AM signal generator. Mark the locations of any trimmers before you adjust them, and its best to get a plastic "tweaker" to adjust coils and trim caps. If you can't get any improvement or the rod antenna is missing, you probably need servicing, which (IMO) probably isn't worth it to get am.YMMV - good luck.
