No love for the original Phase Linear gear?

Fortunately P/L kept the same spacing on the output jacks for the both versions of the 400 and 700. Hence the relay boards easily mount in both versions.
 
Is the DC protection necessary for the Series Two 700? I thought the flame problems were only with the earlier stuff, not the series two.

Any amplifier can fail. The P/L amps do not have an output relay like most amps. If it fails it can take out the speakers. The relay board protects the speakers if the amp fails.

DC protect was optional on most models but came standard on the D-500 and 200. Correct me if I'm wrong there Don.

I don't think any of my gear has a relay. I know the qx4000 doesn't, it has a muting circuit but no relay. (And that circuit just limits voltage to the power transistors). My tube gear doesn't. Not sure about my Sony receiver, but it's not hooked to anything I care about.

Is it really that big a deal? My uncle has used this since 80 or 81 without any problems.

I like the two 700 amps I acquired at low cost. Can't find anything putting out that much power for the $. They are easy to work on too. Only complain is no output relay and the power supply cap voltage has no margin. There is not much room inside to add the realy, but I will get around to it someday.

I have an output relay board for the 700. It bolts on to the existing speaker jacks. No drilling.

That's a very well designed option - if I had a PL amp I'd definitely go for it.

An output relay is not a guarantee, it's a really good idea. It won't protect the amp or speakers in every case, but it may save the amp or speaker someday.

A relay probably will not protect an amp, but it will go a long way to protecting the speakers. It assumes the amp has failed when it triggers. The relay is considered sacrificial if it protects the speakers. The contacts will probably weld when they open.

I designed my relay circuits with a normally open and a normally closed contact. When it triggers one contact opens to disconnect the speaker. The other contact shorts across the speaker to make sure that it doesn't see any DC. Most designs don't do this as it adds cost to the design. I don't think it's an option.

If you drive a modern output transistor, like the MJ21196 HARD, heat can get it. The SOA in the PL 700's for the 96's is pretty good, but heating will take it to the edg, and beyond. The heatsinks on the 700 can get hot driving my K-horns and they are not a difficult load. But I do drive them very hard. Don's board is so simple to build and install and it works....I've triggered one at full tilt boogie on a WOPL and ir saved my K's. I'll use nothing else, because they work.
 
Cool. I may snag one, but right now I'm still building my rack, and the room that the rack goes into. (Taking out a wall, replacing it with a beam, drywall, hardwood, etc).

So, might be premature at this point, since I'm not even using the PL gear yet.

Anybody have a copy of the electrical spec on the 700 output transistors? I am trying to find the Vce max, Pd, and Ic max etc on the device. I know what to use for replacement, but want to know the specs on the original.

I been looking for it a long time. One time I had the DTS data sheets then throw them out thinking I will never need them again.
 
This just me personally, but every piece of Carver equipment I've owned sounded weak and wimpy. No authority whatsoever. I currently have a C-4000 with a TFM-15CB. I've taken the later out of service and replaced it with a Rotel RB-5000. Sounds better, but still no authority. My main audiophile system consist of a Parasound pre amp, Bryston power amp, and Vandersteen speakers. Has anyone else noticed weak, wimpy sound with Carver..? No offense to Carver owners.

That's were the power hogs hang.. Not near as sterile sounding as the Brystons, owned some. sold em after I built my first WOPL 1000

BTW--Got some homebuilt Speakerlab K's with the Crites 1526S woof, some BMS 4592 2" compresion drivers, Martelli Tractix wood horns, and the Crites CT125 tweet. Al Klabbenberger Universal crossovers. If anybody thinks K's don't rock, haven't heard mine, absolutely awesome combination of drivers...and they'll take 300RMS continously for hours...
