No, I've not listened to a White Oak 700. All I can say is that I've own the MXR-130, the Carver Cube, a Carver preamp/tuner (don't recall model) , and the afore mentioned units. Thus far, they've all sounded weak and wimpy with no authority. And btw, the Bryston is the finest sounding power amp I've heard yet. Maybe it's the combination of preamp & speakers. I really don't know. Full, rich, absolutely incredible sound. Bass is low and full, mids are full & rich, highs are sweet. No equalizer required, no sub required.

Had a 4B for years, Spec 2's, Sae's, and stock PL's. Then Joe started to upgrade the PL's. All that high dollar stuff went to the curb. Frequency response is now flat (well, down .10db ) to 10hz. Power now at 500 WPC into 8 ohms with stunning sonics. Hugely increased soundstage, and pure and clean as all the white stuff around the country right now.
No sub, no eq for anything on the K's. Basic foundation shaker now. Can't keep **** on the shelves either...

Not familiar with any upgrades with the Carver stuff, just the PL stuff. I did own a Carver TP-2400, nothing wimpy about that. 750 per into 8 , I tested it at 838 before clip. Pro amp and just as sterile as most. Why is it that most pro amps (not all but most) seem to have a limited soundstage?
I've heard quite a bit about the various reliability issues with the "Flame Linear" 400. However, I know a gentleman who used no less than 17 of them to power his custom sound system, and yet he never had an issue with one blowing up his speakers, to the best of my knowledge. Granted, they were modified somewhat, but in terms of sound quality, not output protection (AFAIK). He used them for 28 years, and the only reason he replaced them is because the transistors started becoming noisy due to thermal fatigue. Part of his array of PL400s can be seen in fig. 4 of this article.

The P/L amps were not originally intended for sound reinforcement use, but that's where many spent their life. Put fans on them like any other pro amp and they would hold up.

Bob Carver is, for the lack of a better comparison, the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde of the audio world. There's no doubt the man has the ability to design great products and I don't think anyone has questioned that fact. The reality is that throughout his career, he's produced some magnificent products as well as the grandest of turds.
A lot of the bad rap that he has amongst the elitist audiophile crowd is due to the utter crap he was dishing out in the 80's and 90's with the exception of a select few statement pieces he made during this time period.

The PL/Pioneer linear turntable really is worth it. It's amazing. Replaced my Pro-Ject Debut III without even trying (once I fixed the suspension damping).

I must agree with trhee. I've not owned any of his products save those mentioned in my previous posts, namely those produced in the 80's. And they were poorly designed and sounded so, and built cheap. My MXR-130 aka "The Receiver", .. the function panel and display were held in place with double sided adheisive tape..! I pressed a button one day and the entire piece fell back into the unit..! I opened it to retreive the display/ fuction board ..and thinking a bracket musy have broken.. I looked and there was no bracket. Only tape. So for me personally, 1980's & 90's Carver, or actually anything Bob Carver is involved with.. is the audiophile equivalent of Sound Design from the 70's.
