The kicker is that i'm not sure i'd want to remove them from their packing and render them "used".

With respect,I never see the use in purchasing something which will never be used.I can never figure out those gals who(f'rinstance)buy a sofa then say "Don't sit on it!!".
Mind you this is coming from someone who has had a pair of 604Cs sitting around for 2 years now,while I decide whether I want to pull apart my Valencias to provide the bass unit for my proposed marriage between the 604 and the 416,to make an Altec 6041.
I'm diggin' my Valencias so much I'd be hard pressed to effectively destroy them for the project.
I should just buy a set of 416s and store the Vals.

I agree wholeheartedly, but being an individual with limited means, to score something like those would have me feeling a bit of reluctance as i wired the crossovers for the very first time, and put those first screws/bolts thru their frames.

I just have as much appreciation for the rarity of their present unused condition, as i do for the sonic bliss that will come out of them.

OTOH, almost every opportunity seen on ebay is eventually repeated. Indeed these are not the first new in box duplexes i've seen on ebay, and they likely won't be the last.

I realize that no matter their condition, what they do best is reproduce sound. I'm sure that after i spent a period of time staring at them, smelling them, and drool staining their boxes i'd have to load them up and listen to the Beatles' audio DVD "Love" from start to finish.

I think Beatles would be most appropriate for the 605's break-in as the Beatles used 605's exclusively for almost all of their mixing and mastering.

That being said: I am a proud owner of the Beatles book being referenced. And I can highly recommend it to any fan of the group, or any audiophile, or historian.

Not to take anything away from the legendary reputation of Altec monitors, and the Beatles and Abbey Roads' wide use of them. The book states that they also used Tannoys.
 
I'm with theophile on this. In the end it's all stuff and you can't take it with you. Stuff is meant to be enjoyed. Stuff can always be replaced. It's the memories of enjoyment that bring the most pleasure.
 
Pretty cool seeing something like this for sale but they really wouldn't interest me - great for collectors but I'd want something I could build a system around and listen too, not something you'd be scared to touch. I'm sure somebody will pay big dollars for them and appreciate them for the rare items they are but I'd look for something like a 604/605 that is a little rough around the edges and a great starting point, not a museum piece.

Theo; having those 604C's on a shelf would have me itching to try something with them big-time but I sure wouldn't want to gut Valencias to get started! If it was me (wish it was!) I'd consider trying the 604's in a vented box first, tweaking on them and listening while using the bass section of the Valencia as a filler woofer.

I've never seen TS specs for C's but if they are anything like the E's they look like they'd do well in a cabinet around 3cu.ft. with tuning up around 55Hz. No bass extension but that won't matter if you are bi-amping with the Valencia's woofer doing it's thing below 80Hz or so - your active crossover should let you match it to the 604 nicely. Size the box so it's a nice fit sitting on top of the Valencia, use a Markwart style crossover to get the most out of the 604 and see what you think.

If nothing else, this will let you know whether a 6041 is a worthwhile endeavor or not without hurting the Valencias or spending money on 416's. Hell, if you make the boxes pretty enough, it could be something you could live with long term and easily switch back to straight-up Valencias if you wanted that flavor again.
 
I also have future "6041" project in mind. I'm thinking of a little more volume for the woofer box and using a woofer with a more powerful motor (515E or Emilar EW15-8B), aiming for ~25hz tuning.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the 6041 tweeter and what would be a comparable substitute or upgrade?
 
ya know.. I think I should write the seller, and let him know that since they are so old, they are "dry rotted" and actually no good. I should let him know it would be very irresponsible for him to dispose of any hazardous material in them improperly...

I should let him know since I'm such a huge and true tree hugger, I would take them for free, and at great expense to myself, would call in a hazardous waste team to responsibally reclaim any hazardous materials in them...

OK.. I had to be the first one to try that angle this time..

Billfort,thank you.That is exactly the right way to proceeed.
I couldn't have formulated it better myself.I was so fixated on the idea of a 6041,that I didn't see the obvious way to proceed.
Why I've even posted here,that I plan to implement the project using seperate cabinets for the bass drivers and the 604Cs.Which makes it even dumber of me not to have seen the sense in the pathway which you just suggested.
Truly,I'm a dumbass sometimes.
 
Over a grand now...

up $600 in 4 hours....I'll bet I could almost hear that guy's cash register ringing from here....:D
