Nothing like the smell of shake shingles in the morning...

Any scuttlebut about the cause? The sky looks blue where I can see it, so lightning is unlikely...

Slight understatement.

Hopefully, no injuries. Anything can be replaced, anyone cannot.

Everyone's fine, even the dogs got rescued.

I was bummed...went to find my camera when the flames were shooting 30ft over the roof, and the batts were dead. By the time I found the backup batteries they had the flames knocked down. Would have made a great pic.

House is gutted, and the neighborhood is gonna smell like a campfire for the next month.

Certainly glad all personnel are un-injured, but I think it's classic that even the High Priest of Technical Wizardry lets the batteries in his camera go dead.....

Certain bit of irony there, huh...

Well, Nimh cells just don't seem to have a shelf life.... I'm forever cycling them through the charger... (remotes, thermometers, hygrometer, cameras etc...)

But trading the bother for going with alkalines is still worth it....

Kinda like a mechanic's car is in bad repair... you work on the stuff all day, your own stuff takes a back seat bigtime...

BTW it looks like the damage was centered on the garage, how did the rest of the place fare, as far as you can see???

Looks like the house is a total loss. I imagine it will be torn down.

Looks are very deceiving in a fire.
The cleaning of contents and internal surfaces from smoke damage can be a huge expense, but is covered by the insurance company. My little garage fire last year wound up running about 3x-4x what I thought it would be.
Heck, the drycleaning bill was several thousand dollars alone for clothes and draperies!

Wow, sorry to hear about this. You can never be too careful, I'm always double checking anything that could be a potential fire hazard.

If so, hope that they do it soon. There's a house around the corner from us that had a fire almost 2 years ago - just a boarded-up eyesore ever since.

Sorry for your neighbors.

Need anyone say it? Smoke alarms! And don't trust them to help your kids - I read they can sleep right through them, so YOU have to wake up and get them out.
I keep a pair of pants with keys, wallet, cell, etc. in the pockets ready when I go to sleep, in case, God forbid, I have to get out quick. And I have an escape ladder ready in the back bedroom, 'cause building codes in the burbs don't require an upstairs back exit like they do in Chicago.

Well, this dumbass was burning some paper of some sort in the backyard BBQ. Next thing you know, it's '9-1-1' time.

Paper in a backyard bbq sets his house on fire??? That was a meth lab.
