Official AR Turntable Owners Thread

That is absolutely beautiful and very classy!

Love that high gloss top plate.

Some of you may have seen this one, looks a bit different now, my tables are always in a state of adjustment. Has a new 10 pound platter, SOTW motor, Grace G-945 uni-pivot arm, modified polymer subchassis and VN springs.

Steve, is that a custom built plinth, or is it one from an AR The Turntable with a custom metal or wood top deck? It is certainly a very striking turntable.

Custom solid cherry plinth with 1"+ piano gloss finish wood top.

Lift off the subplatter and move the belt to a different step on the motor pulley.

I suggest going to Vinyl Engine and downloading the owner's manual:
http://www.vinylengine.com/library/acoustic-research/xa.shtml

Also, do a search of this forum. There is tons of advice on how to service an AR-XA. Pay especially close attention to postings from marcmorin. These are not difficult tables to restore.

Here's a good starting point: http://vinylnirvana.com/ar-diy-do-it-yourself/basic-service-to-an-ar-xa/

Thankyou :thmbsp:

This table is beautiful and I am sure it sounds fantastic.

Just curious, How many and which AR parts are left on this table?

Only the inner platter which has been modified with a SS spindle and ball bearing and the outer platter which is basically an AR ETL-1 platter are original AR parts. The Hurst motor has been modified by SOTW and is super quiet.

Just curious, but who or what is SOTW and what type of modification was done to the Hurst motor?

Goggle "Sound of the wood", Eric makes some nice mods and some crazy tables.
No affiliation, just a fan.

Thanks! I have seen some of his items for sale on eBay so I was aware of Sound of the Wood, I just hadn't connected the abbreviation. And yes, he does make some very nice turntables.

Great platter!!! Great Table!!!

P.S - what type of mat is that ???

Does anyone know where to source the Tri Pad? There's none on the auction site and Google does not help. Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

I found mine on CAM a few weeks ago. I've been hunting for one for about 3 months and finally saw this one and jumped on it immediately. I checked the ads on a daily basis, and it paid off.

Help with very basic tune up to my new to me XB

That is a nice looking XB! I'm listening to my XB now and it is a joy!

Thank you AvFan!
Hope to start a bit of tune up on it soon. Nothing major just to clean and lube.

Hi AK AR People!
Hope all are doing well. Anyone have a few suggestions for me to do?
I want to do just an initial cleanup on the XB I recently picked up. I have watched the video from VinylNirvana to do a very basic tuneup as well as this one, http://boards.vinylcollective.com/topic/88332-turntable-virgin-in-need-of-support/. Need to pick up a belt and talc. I remember seeing a thread, not sure where. I have been running through a number of threads but just cannot locate it. It was talking about lubricating the platter shaft. In it Marc had mentioned to not forget to clean and use a silicone lubricant on the tone arm shaft. I hope I am remembering that correctly. I want to find that thread before I go forward. Does anyone know which thread or what I am talking about? Marc has been pretty busy with the situation at his place so don't want to trouble him. Although at some point I do plan on getting together with him to seek his advice.
I did apply some sewing machine oil to the motor which quieted it down. If plugged in an not turned of I can feel some sort of vibration or "hum" on the pulley. Is that normal?
Thank you so much, I have some final projects to grade and post some other things to take care of but want to get the XB playing.
Any recommendation for a stylus cleaning?
Again thank you everyone for your help!
Jose

Hey Jose... Congrats on picking up an XB. If you're looking for a new belt, there is only one Seller on the auction site, and that is vintageaudioforyoutoo. Marc says his belts are the only ones that should be used because they are like the original, smaller than the others being sold. Put some talc in a small plastic bag along with the belt and give it some shakes.

As for the other stuff you mentioned, I'm sure someone will give you the answers you're looking for. Make sure you post some pics of your XB. :music:

thought i'd mention again that a good source for the single motor (XA, TA, etc.) belt is panasonic part # SJY90080-3. this belt was used on various panasonic and technics models. it is good quality, readily available, and is very good fit on the AR (both platter and pully).

buy genuine panasonic. i've found them online for as little as little as $.95 + shipping. keep spares on hand.

.

Thank you 4Play!
I do have some pictures of the table just after I picked it up. They were posted in this thread on June 20. Hopefully will have more in the next couple of weeks.
Thank for the lead on the belts, I will pick one up soon.

The minor vibration in the pulley is normal. I'm sure someone will explain why it vibrates but XAs and XBs do it. Magic Eraser works well to clean a stylus. Enjoy!

Latest endeavor, replaced Delrin subchassis and arm with regular sub, Technics wand and wood shell. Sapphire arm bearings and Cardas arm rewire. Refinished solid walnut plinth and top plate. New on/off lighted switch, new caps and Hurst 8004 3 watt motor.
