Ohm Acoustics "Upgrades". I Stand Corrected.

If people wish to buy one of their newer offerings or even pop for their so called upgrades, I agree its their money to spend however they choose, but to pay freight to ship drivers to and from Ohm for a simple refoam job seems kooky to me... Im sure they charge a premium for said service. That is my only issue.... a monkey could pull apart those cans that hide the magic smoke and complete a refoam job for 1/2 or 1/4 the cost is all!

I mean I can't say you're wrong there Lol

But I don't think it's freight shipping. I sent my Walsh 2 cans in several years ago (which are smaller but still) for a check up after I bought them 2nd hand and I think it was $25 round trip for shipping. The OP from the previous post can probably fill us in exactly for their incurred costs.

Anyone with some skill and experience could re-foam these. But part of the draw to send them in comes from knowing when you get it back, they'll be inspected from top to bottom. Set it and forget it.

My use of the term freight means shipping in general terms. I’m sorry you shipped them your Walsh 2 cans as those use cloth surrounds that don’t degrade like foam and they likely looked them over top to bottom and found nothing wrong with them!

Freight Shipping in general refers to items with a large foot print and or a weight of >150lbs . My extended family is in the Antique business and ship a lot of items. When freight shipping is involved - it's always a separate entity from the normal work flow. From pick up to drop off. Especially if something will be arriving on a pallet & requires a business address to be delivered.

I posted in the other thread about the surrounds.. But I'll say it here again. Yes I'm aware the Walsh 2 cans use a doped cloth surround.

I sent them to Ohm to be inspected because I bought them second hand. Upon arrival one speaker had a dead tweeter. I didn't know if the fuse had popped or if the tweeter had blown. I had no experience at the time with their Walsh speakers so I felt more comfortable sending in the drivers.

Ohm could have easily told me the tweeter was shot. And charged me for god knows what. But they didn't. Evan called me back and let me know it was only a fuse which had blown. They replaced both the fuses in both the cans to be thorough.

And since it was only the fuse, they charged me the $20 fee for inspection of the drivers ; but nothing else was wrong with them. No extra charge. Evan remarked how they were in nice shape & ready to be enjoyed.

So all in at $45 to have them round trip shipped and gone through completely by the manufacturer. Which is only one of a very few I'm aware of that still services their 40+ year old speakers in this way.

I'm not sorry I sent in my cans to be inspected.

Agreed. In all my visits and conversations with both John and Evan, they were always very polite and happy to talk shop and life with me.

This thread began and is still pertaining to the holes in their customer service as well as the lack of quality control I've experienced on multiple occasions. With a sort of "Ho-Hum" response from Ohm - which is unacceptable for a transactional business accord.

I have not & do not condone the personal jabs taken here by some participants in the thread. I've said it multiple times now. If there are any mods reading - can someone redact some posts which seem to be upsetting other forum members?

I'd like to keep this thread somewhat on track. It seems to be taking a late nose dive.

Your testimonial recontextulized:

You purchased a Porsche from a dealer who said the engine was 700hp. Marketing/media backs up the claims. Sometime after the purchase you find out the car has actually 500hp. After some research you also find out the misinformation was intentional.

You go to a Porsche forum, post your experiences and you find out your not nearly alone nor your claims unique to you.

Not tenable. Not even close.

As for the poster who suggested we're all better off not knowing how the sausage is made... Jesus, baffling. That's a cliche catch phrase not a life mantra used by anyone who hasn't been animated in a children's book..

Good God man. What are you on about?

Why has this struck a chord so hard that people are seemingly losing it.

I didn't say it was you. I'm not even sure who posted it bc I haven't gone back to check. But someone posted a picture of John and made a comment about his physical appearance etc. I just moved past it.

But like 3 or 4 people have already complained about the "personal attacks". So I blanket asked if a mod would look at it since folks keep shaking the cage over it. None of this was aimed at you - your first post didn't come on this thread until a few pages in. So I honestly have no idea what you seem to be so upset about.

I'm allowed to be dissatisfied with a company's customer service, but still like and engage with their products. I'm also allowed to speak my piece but still understand that my singular case doesn't dictate an entire company's history.

Plenty of people have come on here and offered their experiences with Ohm. Many more than I anticipated had not so great experiences. However several people made it a point to state their exact opposite experiences as well.

I'm not trying to deter anyone from doing business with Ohm.

Me still liking their speakers and not totally writing them off as being unworthy of being in business - does not qualify as logic leaving the building.

I see where you are coming from, but damn man this **** is turning into a vendetta.

So, let's unpack your example below.

Your example below implies (or more directly accuses) the owner (JS in this case) of “intentionally” providing “misinformation” and “misleading multiple customers”. I take issue with this as there is no concrete evidence that either occurred. If you do have such evidence, the right thing to do is to lodge a complaint with the BBB in NYC. This is simply a case of sloppy business practices that have have hit a nerve to many in this community (rightfully so!) .

If the view stated in your post is representative of your overall view, it could be said that it is so binary such that you would hold all within a company accountable for bad experience (s), where they may not be intentional.

I don’t think that myself and others would have that same POV.

Lol.

Case stands, as does their art work, naming of their speakers, the purpose of the cans... we appear to be breaching Russell's Tea Pot of absurdity. Unfalsifiable opinions in the face of substantial proof.

Either way there is enough here for anyone who cares to make their independent minds up for themselves.

If you like the way they sound and are enjoying them. I'm seriously happy as hell for you.

Good karma!

I agree with your statement above.

It’s up to the individual to decide how where and when they do business with a company for whatever reasons.

position remains that personal attacks are not warranted.

we have said our piece. Let’s put this puppy to bed!

I really wish ohm acoustics would drop the whole Walsh name from there lineup. Really bad form IMO. They would also go along way with me regarding there rep if they also did away with those cans that house those tradition drivers... then again I’m sure sales would be negatively affected if those cans were removed showing the secret sauce inside!

My .02,

I have and have had many of Ohm Acoustics products. Some were not a fit and moved down the road, others will never leave. During the last couple of decades, I contacted Ohm by phone and Spoke with JS and Evan. I am always amazed by their eagerness to listen intently to my questions and answer them without thought of profit. John even sent me a copy of a schematic to help me further diagnose the issue. Perhaps my 7 or 8 calls to Ohm were all "one offs" and completely out of the norm, I doubt it. Sorry, but I have to call BS on the Ohm bashing because they offer support for their vintage products, and charge what they feel needed, and the seemingly personal attacks on their staff, unbelievable.

JS left a message to call them, apparently wanting to correct and improve a situation. I think Ohm has taken the high road from all I have read and seen.

No, your phone calls were not one offs. They have always been gentle and easy to talk with.

The message was from Evan. Regardless - I chose not to contact them back, since there is nothing left to be said. I do not want them to feel they owe me anything, since they don't.

All my speakers are in great working order and sound awesome (even w/o the vent adapters).

I gave up on the situation because it was so much trouble to get what I had paid for. Which, when received I wouldn't have kept if it were offered for free (which ironically it is "included with the subwoofer SBA").

My issue with their hap hazard communication, lack of tracking numbers provided for orders shipped, lack of quality control and sub par workmanship on the 'updates' for my "ayes" - still stands. Cheap shots at the staff and their appearances are a lowly effort and un-warranted.

The dichotomy which blew my mind, and is making this thread persist - is that they are great people IME. The business side of things may have room for improvement.

I just received my refurbished cans on Monday. From purely a customer service standpoint, I give them an A. John said it would take a month and it did, almost down to the day. I asked if they could fix a dent in one of my cans (gotta love shippers), and they did at no cost. When it was time to pay, I received a courteous call to collect my payment details. Yes, expensive, but the cans arrived triple-boxed and in like-new condition, and they sound SO much better (these things have bass?! now they do!). Other than emailing me when my cans arrived and confirming the one-month turnaround, there's nothing else they could have done to improve on my experience.

I offer all of this simply as one very recent data point focused not on personalities but on Ohm's customer service.

Now back to listening .... :)

After reading all the negative reviews, you have made me think twice about Ohm speakers. It is really to bad, as John was very helpful on the phone one Saturday morning, especially about the size of my 11 x 18 room, and how I didn't need anything bigger, than what he recommended.

Although, I really can't buy any speaker without hearing them, and shipping costs to and from Canada if I have to send them back are a deterrent.

Ohm are one of the few "vintage" brands that are still servicing their products. That says something.

A mistake folks can make is refurbing speakers they haven't ever heard, based on somebody else's wooden ear or decades old memory. If it's cheap there's little to lose, but a $200 vintage set with $100 worth of caps or repairs is often only worth $200...

Here is a discussion about new Ohms from those who have them (https://forum.audiogon.com/discussions/are-the-new-ohm-walsh-speakers-audiophile-quality). Their views should shape yours the most. If you have any qualms, maybe join that discussion or PM some of the contributors.

If one wishes to buy a new speaker from an american manufacturer with a long history one would be better served looking at Vandersteen over Ohm! Ohm is more like Bose as being a shell of a company it once was. Looking at reviews of people who have bought there new products is self serving...These individuals likely never heard an Original Walsh product which would be a Walsh F or A speaker system. Hell 70's Infinitys with walsh drivers are more a Ohm product than what is being sold today... From an engineering and build quality Vandersteen is far superior. Sound is totally objective however!
