Old Large Advent Speakers?

Hi all, I'm new here and I was wondering if you all can help me decide on purchasing speakers for my Pioneer SX-990.

I found this pair of old large advents that need to be refoamed and the guy selling is asking for 100 dollars. I don't know much about speakers, all I know is advents seem to be pretty well revered here.

Do y'all think this is a good deal and a good match for the amp I have?

Welcome to AK! If those are the vinyl utility cabinets, I would try to negotiate a better price. If refoaming is all they need ,they would probably be a good fit with your amp.

Okay thanks for the responses guys. I just noticed that there are two lines on the bottom sub and was wondering what those were? Seems to me that the cone was fixed at some point and if that's the case, should that deter me at all?

I also called the guy and he said both subs needed refoaming. How much would that cost me?

Oh and one more thing, I found a pair of Advent AS2 for 200 and don't know if those would better match my system.

The lines are OK, just the wires from the voice coil to the leads on the back that go to the terminals. I don't know the AS2 model. You can get the speaker foam kits from Simply Speakers, be sure to get the ones for Original Large Advents. Probably around twenty bucks.

okay thanks so much man, I think I'm gonna pull the trigger on these!
You might find someone local or not too far away that does speaker repair.
There is a speaker repair shop not too far from me. They have been doing speaker repair for quite awhile. I had a pair of OLA's that I traded to an AK'r for another pair of speakers. The Large Advents are nice sounding speakers.

The 990 is only 27 watts . I have one. The Advents will eat those for lunch. Shame you can’t get those for less. Do the tweeters work ?

As far as I know the tweeters work great, the guy said they're good and dry, which kind of confused me but I guess dry means good? haha. And do you think they're worth less? He was asking 150 and I managed to talk him down to 100.

Also, is the pioneer not powerful enough to give these speakers justice? It was handed down to me by my father and I really do like the warm midrange sound, but is it something to upgrade in the future?

And yeah, there's a place by me that re-edges for 60 per speaker which seems kind of high, so I'll probably do it myself

Do it yourself. Very easy speakers to refoam. I’ve done several pairs now. All came out perfectly. They could use more power, just don’t try to drive them too hard or you might burn out a tweeter from hard clipping the amp. Tweeters hate square waves...

BTW, those are woofers, not subs. Subs play the one or two octaves below a typical woofer. Those will dig into the lower 30s.

Oh right I meant woofer haha thanks for the correction. And thanks for the heads up! I'll definitely not drive the speakers too hard and will probably refoam it myself, hopefully there's a YouTube vid on how to refoam properly.

Advent speakers like that could benefit from more power but when they were current, Advent brought out the 300 receiver. Only 15wpc but it did a credible job powering those speakers. I bought my first pair of Advents in 1973 and following a recommendation by The Advent Corporation for a Sony TA-1150 integrated @35wpc, bought one of those too.

I used that amp with those speakers for 5 years until I got a 2nd pair. Definately needed something more substantial for a two pairs in tandem.

Ouch! That is a high price.

The reason I traded my pair is most of my tube amps are lower powered. Around 5 to 17wpc. They do sound good with some power though.

College roommates rig was a 30-watt per channel Marantz 1060 and Advents. Worked fine for him. Not concert volume in a large room but plenty to play tunes loud at times. Good start.
