Old Large Advent Speakers?

That's a question that can't be answered precisely. Some folks just love Advents and pay handsomely for them, in any condition. I have given some away, paid 10 or 20 bucks for others. I let them all go after doing a side by side test with Boston Acoustics A150's.
 
As little as possible basically buy for parts price. If your a buyer put your shoes in sellers feet. You have a set of speakers likely being sold locally via CL, facebook, nextdoor or thrift. How many buyers will you run across that want bigger older speaker that needs repair, let alone can do the work themselves. Id pay 25-50 for utility cabinet advents or 50-75.00 max. for walnut OLA or NLA speakers...
 
$75 would be reasonable for utility cabinets in good condition if they needed no work.
Your over paying for a speaker that needs work, it's the wrong cabinet, and you don't have enough power to utilize the speaker.
But a good speaker none the less.
 
okay thanks so much guys for your input, I'll probably pass on this one, unless I can barter way down...any other speakers you guys recommend that pair nicely with the sx-990 (particularly a pair that won't be overkill for a 28 watt amp)?
 
klipsch kg series, ADS bookshelf speakers, paradigm, energy, psb, early epi, dynaco. Most can be had for under 100 and use rubber surrounds on woofers and are usually fairly efficient.

Nope. Just pick some more speakers and you will get some more opinions. You'll hit on a winner soon. You're going about it in the right way.
If you get tired of waiting go for a nice pair of plug and play $50 Realistic Nova 8 or Optimus 5. They will serve you just fine till you decide to spend significantly more money.
 
You probably would be better off looking for a newer, smaller set of speakers to mate with your amp- if you do get the Advents and refoam them, you would be lucky to recoup the cost if you decide to sell them. I like my old utility Advents, but they are big and not very pretty!

Welcome,,, I guess it depends where you are,,, guy gave me a pair of Walnut OLAs at a hamfest a while ago,, they had original foam, and actually worked,,, but I refoamed them and replaced the caps before I put em to daily use!!!
Not many hamfests around this year tho!!!!
 
I got a SX-990 about 5 years ago. Maybe more. Anyways, it came with some Dynaco A10 speakers. That combo sounded really nice. I ran it with some other speakers like the AR4x, A25 and even some OLA’s. It sounded good and got loud enough for what I was using it for.

I really like the way the early Pioneer SS receivers sound. Two that stand out are the SX-990 and SX-1000TW

I recently got a package deal with a Pioneer SX-737, utility OLA’s (needing refoam) and a Yamaha YP-D4 Turntable for 100$. Someone moving from NY to FL and wanting to unload his whole stash of audio gear. Also got 3 crates of pretty nice records included that were going to the curb if I didn’t take them;)

A lot depends on your location. I paid $50 for a pair of walnut OLA that needed to be recapped and refoamed. I paid $100 for bullnose NLA that were reconed badly and needed to be repaired (I moved them on quickly). I sold a pair of refoamed Advent/1 for $150. I've seen working OLA advertised for up to $350 locally.

But really, I typically spend about $30 for diner out with my wife. The difference between $50 and $100 is not much if they are speakers you would like to have. And everyone needs to listen to OLAs, even if just to decide that they don't like them. I don't question buying speakers at $100 or less as long as they have a good reputation and the OLA has a very good reputation. Of course, lower is always better for the wallet, but . . .
 
Okay thanks again you guys, this forum has been extremely helpful...I understand how many of you can go down the rabbit hole when collecting audio gear haha, there's just too many pieces to try out.

Anyways, I've been reading that the Nova 8's are actually really nice, despite them being sold by RadioShack, and while I'm not able to find them below 100, I can pick up a really nice pair for 130. I also really love the way they look.

Theres also Criterion 25A Walnut Bookshelf Speakers that I can get for 40 dollars which seems like a steal, but I haven't read much on them.

Finally, there's some Optimus Realistic Mach Three speakers that have already been re-foamed that I could get for around 150.

Please let me know if any of you have tried any of these out, and if the prices seem fair (I also don't mind spending 130 on the nova 8's, especially since it seems like many are being sold for 150-200 now)

Wow! That's an incredible deal!

And yeah, I'm in love with the sx-990, even though it's pretty low powered. I'm too young to have tried many of these old receivers...I'm only 20 but I'm very lucky that my dad has had this one lying around. This amp really seems to warm things up in a very pleasant way, but still manages to retain definition.

Out of all those speakers you've tried, which ones really seemed to bring the best out of the sx-990?

I think the Criterion 25A speakers will sound disappointing. I have some good Criterion 5xb speakers that I like less than my Nova 8 and Optimus 5. I would expect much less from the Criterion 25A.
The prices on the Realistic speakers are very stable coast to coast. $50 fair condition to $150 premium condition. If todays price is $130 then todays price is $130.
The sound is a solid good. You may have them for a while before something sounds better at a justified price.
 
Ok cool yeah I'll give it some time to think through, but the nova 8's really seem to be the ones for right now. If the woofer and tweeters are in good working order, will I still need to recap them just in case?
 
Maybe, most likely it would improve. But you probably won't notice it if everything is working unless you do one then the other. Sometimes you don't know what you're missing till you do it. And often there's no improvement. If you like them when you audition at time of purchase, then use them till curiosity gets the better of you.
Remove the grills for inspection. And make "sure all 4" drivers work.
 
Here are some pics of the nova's, they seem to be in perfect shape right? Sorry if I'm asking stupid questions, this is just my first time buying old speakers.

They look like you're basic Nova 8 to me. The two center drivers are mids, not tweeters. The little one at the top is the tweeter. They're different drivers. Yes they look the same, but they're not. Hopefully they are all correct, probably are.
Your risk level is very low.
