Once more Sansui transistor substitutions

How about the 3 leg odd ball diode in the 505 I am getting ready to work on. It is a common cathode diode (I guess 2 diodes in one package.)

I see that the 2sa958 has still not been found to have a sub. Is this not a common Sansui used transistor that is known for having issues? There must be an available replacement. I somehow remember there was an OnSemi transistor that would work as a replacement. I Googled AK and found no references of any help on that one.
 
Had to order something else not available locally, so I now have the KSA's. Needed to be replaced but didn't solve the problem. Will create a thread.

Seems quite ok to me.

Toni, I just have seen yours post about substitution of those two transistors... I must say you that KSC1845 is not good substitution for 2SC1313 (normally if those data are correct)... look at bold text....
 
Maybe KSC1815 in place of KSC1845 as a substitute for 2SC1313 ?

Thanks Kale & Hyperion. I would fix that but it seems I can no longer edit the first post with the new forum software so we are now screwed. :eek: I hope a mod sees this: I need to be able to edit it to fix errors and add new ones or this thread loses all its worth.

It seems that after 3 hours the edit-button has disappeared from my previous post. This seems a bit quick. I would think it should be ok to edit ones posts indefinitely but I realize its not always smart or cool (sometimes edits make all following posts obsolete). However IMO removing editing possibility after 1, 2, 3 (?) hours is just silly. Nobody can correct their typos, mistakes or behavior anymore and it can be costly to somebody who follows their advice and only causes useless arguments and ill will which in many cases could have been avoided.

The old way was much better.

EDIT: deleting posts or threads is no longer possible either.

You haven't been following along in the AK New Format forum, or you would not have been surprised.

That one thing about the "old way" may have been much better, but you assume, incorrectly, that the current configuration is final. That is not the case. There are still functional issues which have to be resolved, before we start tinkering, again, with member permissions. The last time some actions had unintended consequences, and we're not going down that road again, before it is time.

Your patience is requested, and appreciated.

Re the 2SC281, the original is a tubular metal case, and these are used in many instances as bias transistors in conjunction with a metal bracket/clip attached to the heatsink or driver. The KSC1815 is a plastic TO92 package, and there may need to be some creative mounting adaptation for these to be used.

Hi John. Good point. I've previously mounted new heat sinks to TO92s but worry they are going to somehow fall off and short something out :(. Before swapping the bias transistors I look at temp with an IR thermeter and if they are not too warm I feel comfortable moving forwards with a TO92, or similar, substitute and measure temperature after installation to check. Although they can take much higher temp, i try to keep under 40 C.

On the otherhand, I've actually started to lean towards leaving those bias transistors alone to keep original look if they measure okay. If they must be replaced with higher power handling substitutes I've also had some success with ~1 Watt, TO39 package substitutes, which aesthetically look the part in the older Sansui's.

The key thing about bias transistors like this is that they must not have their collector connected to the case, otherwise you need to make special arrangements when mounting the replacement. In other words 'electrical isolation' for the mounting clip, which may interfere with the reason why it is there in the first place - i.e. thermal coupling - for close thermal regulation of bias.

Suitable transistors are getting harder to find, so it doesn't surprise me at all that a TO39 package transistor can/has been used.

This is incorrect
- and has unfortunately been copied to a few other substitute lists.
2SA839 --- MJE15035, 2SC1669

A little research has yielded that 2SA839 (PNP) can be replaced with MJE15033 (PNP). (or MJE15035)

The 2SC1669 (NPN) mentioned can be replaced with an MJE15032 (NPN)

Like I said above late last year, nothing can be changed anymore. The new forum software doesn't allow editing of old messages. So, the list is now useless, does have some wrong info but it cannot be corrected. Everybody realize this and recheck everything before using any replacement.
