I know they do now. They make very good recevers at a decent price. Ive heard good things about there older stuff as well. But im not too sure..

there vintage stuff is comparable in quality to other japanese stuff. i'm not familiar with their new stuff, but understand it is quite good. i have a bpc set-up. p-301 pre-amp, m-5150 amp, t-4010 tuner, dx-710 cpd, ta-r301 cassette deck. while it is not beefy by any means, it sounds really good. the amp is strong and very clean sounding. almost clinical. it's 150 wpc into 8 ohms.

I've had the TX-2500mkII and TX-4500mkII, both are vintage receivers from the late '70s. I would describe their sounds as detailed but not harsh with a very tight bass response. I actually find their sound to be somewhere between vintage and modern. Not tube like, not super clean..just really nice sounding. I really liked the TX-2500 II for a small receiver. It had an excellent sounding phono section.

Very reliable , good prices & sound , i have had 80's & two 90's models , one thing i did notice with the 90's one's (also two of my friends have early 90's one's) is around the 15 year mark they kind of got "tired" & didn;t have the punch or output they once had , but i got my moneys worth with no complaints & they still run as second systems .

My perception of Onkyo circa 2009...

The NAD of home theater. Fair gear at fair prices, Mid-fi with acceptable build quality. Good all around HT gear for someone who isn't caught up in chasing the last 10-5%, but knows decent gear from junk.

I don't mind my Onkyo receiver at all. its a low model, TX-sr304

all i use it for it my TT/radio. works fine, sounds damn nice for how much it set me back. under 200 new.

I can't compare it to anything, but to me it sounds very nice. my new, old speakers really woke this thing up!!

As far as I am concerned I think there gear is quite good. I have an Onkyo M-588F Amp with matching P-388F pre amp and The DX-788F matching cdp. All of these are true balanced configuration untis however, at the moment, I am not running it that way since I have included a Onkyo EQ-35 and Marantz SA-8001 SACD. Running this thru JBL S2600 horn loaded speakers. All of the Onkyo pieces are from thier Integra line of products which were well regarded at the time.

Not the best out there but does anybody truly know what is the best? This stuff sounds good to me and as a matter of fact I just had a friend stop in to hear it. He just bought a Mcintosh MC-402 with a mac tube pre with B&W 803D speakers-he likes my setup better.

Onkyo made good quality gear.
I have an Onkyo A-7050 (Integra A-550 in Japan) amp from around 1974. I love the sound. I would compare it to a Sansui AU-505 amp.
Very good Phono pre section. Sounds extremely good through headphones.
I also love the beautiful Champagne anodised front!

I have some Integra Home Theatre gear that is very reliable and came with a 3 year warranty. I've had it for 4 years and never had a problem...Integra division of Onkyo is like comparing Toyota to Lexus. Better parts, Better Build Quality. I wouldn't hesitate to buy Onkyo Products and highly recommend Integra Products. My Integra DVD Player has a great audio section including 192Khz and 24bit dac. Will play anything you put in it including SACD and DVD Audio as well . YMMV.

Back in the day, Onkyo was known particularly for its tuners. The TX-9090 II is one of the best digitial tuners ever built for RF performance

I own 2 single play C.D. players. One I purchased on the 'auction site" years ago. Made in 1992 and still going strong. Plays most burnt C.d.'s too.

I recently purchased an Onkyo TX-8555 (100 wpc) and I'm happy with it. It's got a huge cast aluminium heat sink, never gets hot. It appears to be well made. I also recently purchased an older Onkyo HT unit - I think it's probably 10 years old. No issues there either, although that baby does heat up.

Check this out - search EBAY for M-504 (Onkyo's killer 165 wpc amp) there's a guy selling a BRAND NEW one. It's gonna go for some major bucks. A Craigslist seller here in Jacksonville recently offered an M-504 for $100. I tried to get it, but he never got back to me. Don't know if he sold it, or if he realized that it was worth way more than $100. I cried a little.

One of my tape decks is an Onkyo TA-R33. Excellent piece of equipment, and I've heard great things about most everything they made.

Onkyo puts a lot of effort and better parts into their Integra line. Many people do not know about that line so those products become pretty good deals on Audiogon.

Well.....

A run of the mill Japanese company for the most part. The only exception being the M-508 amplifier which is a fine piece. Their crowning achievement was the Grand Integra M-510 amplifier. These two pieces make up for all the ho-hum gear they have put out.

Thanks for all the replies. The responses seem generally positive. Curiously, there was very little in this thread and the other one linked regarding Onkyo speakers. I spotted a pair, and will at least give them another look now.
