+1 here for onkyo. I have an onkyo integra 508 and it's one of my favorite amps. I wouldn't say it has a signature sound it just reproduces whatever you feed it very nicely with no coloration.

Remember, all an amp is supposed to do is amplify sound. If you have crap equipment upstream feeding into the amp, you'll still have crap sound. Reread the first sentence.
I have always liked Onkyo equipment. I also think they are usually under rated by consumers. All the Onkyo amps/receivers I have heard put out a good sound provided you provide a nice signal going in. I had an early TX-4500MkII that surprised me it sounded so good. I was very happy with it for quite a few years.

I've got an Onkyo TX-SR507 A/V receiver that I use for a daily driver. I think it sounds great, even when just pushing two speakers. Really fires up my Klipsch Kg4s quite nicely. I agree with the assessment of the Onkyo 'sound' - it has a neutral sound but reaches pretty deeply on the bass if you set up right. My unit isn't the highest horsepower model, but for my use it works just fine!

If you are going to audition the amp at the sellers place I would recommend that the amp is warmed up for at least a half an hour before you listen and make a decision . I have a 504 paired with a P-301 and I listen to it almost every day and I love the sound of it . It just sounds better when it has fully warmed up . It really makes a difference .

Well said! I think I'll give it a go, thanks for all the input. My first experience of Onkyo was in college SIU. I had a Onkyo receiver driving some JBL bookcase speakers. It'll be fun to have the green lights around again

I've got an Onkyo 575x AVR that sounds very good in stereo. Pretty much neutral. Good enough for me to put away my NAD 1600 preamp/Tuner with Audio Design PA100 power amp (which is far superior to the NAD). With just 70 wpc driving a pair of Energy RC 30 towers it down right kicks A$% as mid-fi systems go. Of course it isn't as refined as high end gear, but considering it does just as good a job with DD/DTS 5.1 and costs much less, I'd say thats a good value. Onkyo has had some Quality Control issue's though with their AVR's in 2001 when they made mine. Then again they made so many, the incident rate may be no higher than other brands.
I have a seperate stereo system for music with way more Invested, but I'm just saying Onko has some good gear.

There's not much to dislike about the M-504. Go for it. It has to be one of the best looking amps of all time, and it is a warm/neutral sounding SS amp. What is the price like?? Please do post up some pics when you buy it!

it's not too bad, price is $400.00 range I've seen some on ebay go for more. If it's well worth it I may pull the trigger

My daily driver and bedroom set is a Onkyo T-9 tuner and got a A-5 item integrated to match it. Got my 1219 Dual tied to it. Loaned a pr JBL L100s to the Mrs's system while I replaced the surrounds on her Infinities. When done, I brought the JBLs into the bedroom replacing a pr Dynaco A25s. Did this a week ago. I am really enjoying this combo.
I like the sound of Onkyo stuff. Worked on several receivers for people. Good stuff. Have a Pioneer SX 850 in the LR with my mint pr of JBL 100s. The bedroom set started with one ment to be a junker. It was too good to junk. Found a single one with a similar ratty cabinet. They lived in the shop for 6 years on a Kenwood. I like the sound of all three sets. The Onkyo seems to have the least colored sound when compared to the Pioneer and Kenwood.
The Onkyo line doesnt have the following Marantz, Pioneer and Kenwood have. Got $125 in the amp and $75 in the tuner. The A-5 is rated at 65 watts and its got plenty of power. Enjoy.

Because the consumers are not flat. All televisions should "look" the same too, but hey, walk into any store and look. Different colors, some are warmer some are cooler, some are brighter and some are darker.
A perfect amp should not color the sound in any way, I will agree with you. But almost all do it in some way, especially when you turn them up to loud. The speakers hooked up to them, which the manufacturer usually won't know what that will be, present a different load at different frequencies at differnt volumes.
Thats why I have everything from one manufacturer and year, and I pretend it sounds neutral.
They did lots of listening tests back then, right? Using their speakers and amps, ...
