Have one sitting right in front of me. It is a fantastic receiver. Does everything well. I've had a bunch of different receivers in the past 3 years, from 40 watters up to 125 watters, Sansuis, Marantzes, Pioneers, HKs, and this one is in the top 3 or 4 I've had for overall sound. I don't know about how it is to work on, but I'd highly recommend it.

Well if you want a TX5000 story how bout this? Once upon a time in a land far far away (actually it was about 50 city blocks away) a young 2ChanMan owned one (1981 maybe 82) . While 2cm and his buddy the crazy Navichuck were sittin back enjoyin a few wobbly pops listening to music on 2cm's beloved stereo of that era which was a pair of Leak 3030 on custom stands wired up with (at the time) crazy funky high end speaker cable called Polk Sound Cable , and a Pioneer PL300a TT with a Empire (if I recall) cartridge . The system sat in a very nice looking modern Italian stereo stand made with glass and real wood who's name I can't recall , as we sat there drinkin n smokin n listening to rock n roll we heard kinda a PING ! sound we looked over to see my Onkyo half way through about a 2 and a 1/2 foot drop to crashing into the lowest glass shelf landing in an explosion of glass everywhere !!! . The center of the 3 glass shelves and the one the TX5000 was on had given way actually the pins that held the shelf had given way . I was picking up glass for months afterwards 2 shelves literally exploded !!! . The TX5000 was 100% unscathed ! not a scratch and I kept it for at least a couple years trouble free after that , before I went on a endless gear swap (owned near 200 pieces o gear now). That was about my second or third piece of gear ever and I may have rose coloured glasses on due to my story but I recall a good sounding receiver with a great tuner section kinda funn to use .

I seem to stumble upon this post about once a year while looking up TX5000's.
For some reason I love this story.
Hopefully, after this morning, i won't be needing to look up TX5000's any more...
Just bought one of these at a great price not working on Ebay. Tuner need repair, shaft coming out of slot and relay sticking. Seems to be a common problem being that another one on Ebay states tuning not working. I installed a shield cut from metal with two screws holding it in front of the wheel stopping it from coming out again. Sealed relay was the problem so I removed it and carefully cut it into to expose inners and with a touch of deoxit got it going again. I rather not use deoxit on points like relays have but the problem was not the points but the plastic piece that raises to engage the points sticking. Works fine now. Started recapping but the old Nichicon caps were testing as good or better then the caps I use so I stopped recapping after doing the output board. These old Onkyo receivers are built like tanks and sound fantastic. What I call sleeper receivers one can still get good deals on. Not the best looking of the 70 receivers but sound great.

I have a TX-7000, which is in that same line. Very nice receiver that has a very nice tuner and phono section. Somewhere here on AK, there is a copy of a review article of the TX-5000 that has some interesting info. One thing I remember from the article was the TX-5000's capability to handle a 2 ohm load, even though it wasn't factory rated for such. Another thing on my TX-7000 that may possibly be shared with the TX-5000 is the usage of the same type of output transistors that were used in the Pioneer SX-1980, which I believe are unavailable. But mine have never gone out and also EchoWars has a thread here somewhere where he shows how to modify available devices to fit.

I did end up getting the TX-5000 back in July 2020.
A fellow AKer fixed up a few minor issues and it’s a nice machine.
Definitely not a low volume receiver though.
Need to give it some gas to enjoy it.
It’s gigantic yet beautiful to look at.
It mostly sits unused as I have other receivers/amps I prefer the sound of.

Still love the super wide-look of that receiver line!! Just curious, could you provide some details as to the sound or what you don't like about the sound as compared to other receivers you have? I like my TX-7000's sound, but it may be a bit loose/boomy and over-emphasized in the bass region. Although the phono section was very good for a receiver I thought. Perhaps just only a bit behind a Yamaha CR-2040...

I’d say the sound is on the darker side.
Not particularly engaging. It sounds fine but not special.
I mainly listen to a Sansui 4000 which is just so lively and musical sounding. Like you’re part of the performance.
I also listen to an Onkyo A5 which I love for it’s almost clinical reproduction of sound. Clean and clear.
I was kind of hoping the TX-5000 would be a receiver version of the A5.
As for the wide body, right around the time I got the Onkyo a friend got a Yamaha CR-1020 that I cleaned up for him. While I had it I stacked the two for kicks. That was a lot of receiver.
