Open Baffle Epiphany!

New full-range drivers in the house. Just received Lii Audios newest 10”. Got them placed in my open baffles late this afternoon. I’ve been playing them for several hours. They sound great out of the box, but it’ll take a bunch of hours to break them in.

I saw that new driver, Pricey compared to the rest of the offerings.....................At 2k it has some MIGHTY competition on the market, though most are 8 inch. would be interested to hear your thoughts as compared to your previous 10" Lii Drivers. The price would seem to dictate it is MUCH better. The silver 10 with the Extreme surprised me quite a bit. I expected it to be quite strident. I find it mostly the opposite being very smooth yet extended. image quite well

These are more resolving than the Crystals. Time will tell how much they smooth out. Just a bit of glare at this point.

I love the Crystals, and have been very happy for the last few years with them. We will see if, ultimately, the new ones will be that much better.

Emerald Physics EP-X, I don't think many sets of these were ever built, sound amazing. guess mine would by a hybrid setup, open baffle mid/high, standard bass cab. The base chamber is ported around the bottom.

Nice, I had several pair of the EP, 2.7, 4.4 & 4.8 always wondered about yours like the way they set up the bass. I thought of all the models I had I prefered the 2.7 with the twin 15 inch bass drivers. I initially thought I would be in BASS overload but they were actually quite balanced

I recently moved my room around and set up on a DIAGONAL (Steve at Decware wrote a paper on it) It allows for a sort of corner loading with bass and nulifys a lot of room issues. I am testing a new to me amp and did not want to hook it to my main speakers so I sat an older pair of Tang band on the floor supported so they face the listener. Im blown away by how good an 8" driver with ZERO baffles setting on the floor can image height at approx 6 feet high and throwing an image width of 10-12 feet and I actually have some Bass...............Its crazy..........Diagonal set up allows me to get some distance between the speakers and set back. Prior I was forced into a near field setup. Experimentation sure does open ones eyes to possibilities, Never would have thought I would get these results

I've read that paper, and have been intrigued by that type of setup. I really wanted to try it, but I do not have the right room layout.

What size is your room, and did any window, doorways, etc. make it difficult?

Hey Joe (Where you going with that gun in yo hand?)

Are you using the crossover that Lii provides?

Yes currently using the Leonidas supplied crossover. Once I get thing settled then I will upheave everything again and go with low wattage on the Silver and my Crown XLS1002 on the W-15, see what Bi-amping gets me gains wise

The green line in the crude diagram represents where I currently have the speakers set up. the gear is all back in the corner (not optimum I know) Previously I was seet up on the short wall between the Hall and the opposite wall window 2 (I made an MDF Board with Drywall attached and sat inside the window behind the blinds to block reflections off the glass. I have a detached 22 X 32 garage I plan to convert for a listening space / man cave.........First I have to get all my Tools out of there. Big job thats hard in a disabled body

Sorry it has taken me so long to respond. Where is your listening position in the diagram? I was thinking that in this type of layout, the speakers would be positioned on each side of the corner, and your listening position would be the green line?

I added a purple 0 to show my listening position, and where each speaker sets along the green line there is now approx 8.5 feet between the speakers (It was about 6 feet prior) and I get to set back almost 8 feet. (used to set back approx 5 feet)

I have set up 3 different style speakers like this and all have good results. The biggest problem can be Bass gets boomy, depending on volume and speaker. I thought about building bass traps for the corner. Have not got enough motivation or time to tackle that project yet

Sorry if this is dumb question. there's just so much info in this thread. Trying to catch up.

What makes a speaker good for OB? Is it only full range? Or can I do a two way? Specifically Epicure speakers that roll off well together. And needing only a cap for a crossover.

Thanks

Who says room treatment needs to be expensive and hard to setup. Heres a pic of my Harbor Freight Moving blankets hung on 2 walls and 2 layers of blankets. (I am fairly sure the blankets are stuffed with wool) Helped the room IMMENSLY. Much better Focus much Less sibilance............

Had to forgo the Diagonal setup. It sounds great to start. I found it distracting to have the artist 5 feet back in the corner of the room and artifacts of the recording up front with the speakers. Set things up on the long wall sounding much more cohesive, Better IMHO

Here is a video with the latest Lii Audio full-range drivers - the Platinum 10.

Which Lii Drivers did you have prior to the new Platinum ?

I had the Crystal 10's twice b-4, never could get into them. I now have the Silver 10's they are much smoother with great extension. I am now bypassing the passive Crossover. Running the Silver 10's Full Range off my Tom Tutay Heathkit EL84 amps and the W-15 is crossed at 150 Hz Using my Crown XLS1002 with the Dual Voice coils in Parallel..................Much better than the passive IMHO
