Open Baffle Epiphany!

hopefully martin will chime in. don't see why not. i assume poultrygeist did something similar w/ his lowther setup which has 2 alphas/side.

Thank you, rogerfederer.

Can the baffle be extended vertically to run dual 15's?

Yes it can and there is no limit to how high. The only consideration is keeping the height of your FR diver at or very close to ear height when you are in your preferred listening position.

Stay with the plan as far as baffle width and side to side distances for the FR driver and you'll be fine.

Thank you, Rob.

I certainly understand keeping the FR driver near ear height.

Also understand the side to side distances for the FR.

How does having a wider baffle negatively impact the sound of the FR driver?

You've got me interested in giving those Tang Bands a try, TubeHFN. Earlier in the thread there was a cool build that used a line source of them (I think). I've been curious about them ever since.

This is my first experience with the TB's, too. I am very interested to hear what they have to offer.

I don't know that it would negatively or positively impact the FR driver by going wider. I thought you were basing your project on an existing design and in keeping the basic design parameters, going with the same side to side dimensions would give you the expected results of the original plan.

Adding a second bass driver should only improve the bottom end (about a 3db increase), yet the FR response should remain largely unaffected as long as the horizontal dimensions remain the same.

A lot of folks are going the two woofer and single FR driver per baffle route. And it's usually with the Eminence Alpha's. It's a tried and true approach that will likely turn out well for you. :thmbsp:

Thank you, Rob. I appreciate the information.

I am looking forward to having this set built to see how it compares to the JE Labs based OB I have with the University 6201's.

The Tang Band W8-1808 is one good looking full range driver.

I used them first in these folding wing OB's and liked the mids/highs but as you might expect the bass was lacking.

I then used them over Eminence Alpha H-frames for several years with excellent results and would have kept them if I hadn't bought the Lowthers.

Compared to the DX3's they were a little too polite for my tastes. Very refined but laid back and not in your face like the lit up Lowthers. At 93dbs they require more power than the DX3 and my 2a3 Bottlehead SET was barely enough.

I seemed to remember working out an OB design for the W8-1808 full range driver and two Alpha 15A woofers a few years ago. Looking back in my notes this is what I found, this is based on manufacturer's specs for the W8-1808 driver. I have not built this design so consider it a possible starting point.

OB size is 20" wide by 40" tall

Alpha 15A woofers centered horizontally and vertically at 8" and 23", make sure to measure the actual driver diameters and sketch out the build to check for interference.

TB W8-1808 shifted 1" off center horizontally and at a vertical height of 34", close to ear level when seated.

Low pass the woofers at 200 Hz with a LR 2nd order filter.

High pass the TB at 300 Hz with a LR 2nd order filter, wire the TB out of phase.

No boost required, this system produces 93.5 dB/2.83V/m on axis with the -3 dB point at 45 Hz.

Thank you, MJKing.....!

Did you ever try them with a more powerful amp? Do you think they might've come across as a little more polite than the Lowthers because of the low power you were feeding them? Maybe not as I just checked and see the Lowthers are only a few db greater in sensitivity.
