ortofon cartridge opinions please

The compliance is a little higher, just as I remembered, 30cu while present OM20 is 25cu. I think OM20 was 30cu from the start and later it was changed to 25. It will mean for most arms about 1Hz lower res. frequency.
I will buy one next time it will be available.

The more I use the Digitrac stylus, the more impressed I am with it. It's almost as nice as the Denon DL 110 I was using till I kinked the cantilever!:sigh: I'd love to get the Denon retipped, but the factory must not do it anymore. Maybe I'll just get another Digitrac for insurance! ( I'm such a klutz sometimes!)

I bet alot of you are glad I asked about the Ortofon OM5E and that Quest gave such a wealth of info on the digitrac 200NE stylus swap. We'll all be appreciating good listening for a long time to come and at such a low cost. Amazing! This is what AK is all about IMO.

Great thread oldhifyguy, really shows how much interest there is in the OM Ortofons and also in finding a great deal.

Quest, thanks again for pointing out the 200NE and its valuable stylus. I intend to give mine more play time and look forward to trying it on the LM15.

The seller had something like 488 remaining 200NE when the auction ended so he maybe he'll be back with more.

Sfox52, that's not very good news about Denon factory retipping! I thought for sure they did do it at one time. I guess no more? :tears:

I'd love to find out for sure about the Denon factory retip. I had read that they'd swap a new cartridge for a busted one for about 1/2 of the cost of new. I talked to a guy at the NJ service center & he didn't know about any repair available. Soundsmith will do their thing...for $150!!

As I've posted elsewhere, don't forget to check out Jico's pricing on OM series styli. Big time bargain!

If you want a sampler of what the Ortofon/Digitrac 200 NE, the “Quest 20”, sounds like, here is the link. I cut off the last 30 seconds of the song and it is in mono. In stereo, it opens up very well. It was recorded from the amp directly to an iPod, a WAV file, then converted to a smaller MP3.

Curious, are there any special reasons why the more expensive JICO OM 20 & 30 are the same price, $29, and the lesser OM 10’s are more, $32? The description all say, simply, “Elliptical Stylus”, not bonded, nude, and Fine Line. Are they the same? How much is the shipping?

It looks like we have a couple of stylus options for the Ortofon, the JICO and the Digitrac.

I wish I knew the answer. All I can tell you is that, for $29, the OM 30 by Jico sounds GREAT. I was listening to it again tonight, and I suspect its starting to break in now. Separation and sound stage are quite good, very wide. Great detail without grain or over-brightness. Disk noise is almost non-existent. Nice mids and detailed, chest-pounding bass when needed, without being boomy. I'm liking this thing a lot!

I've been playing a "Quest 20" on my Rega Planar 3 and it's phenomenal. I have the Digitrac stylus on an OM-30 body, so if you wanted to put a price tag on this setup it would be valued well over $250! Grand total for me .... $30!

I am new to this forum, this is a very innovative approach.:thmbsp:
Just wondering how would you go about doing this today ?
I have an Ortofon OMB20 available.

I have an Ortofon OM 5E. Overall, I'm content with the sound quality. I'll probably upgrade the stylus to a 20E when I start work though. You can put a pretty damn nice stylus on the same cartridge.

Some help needed, Please.
I have a Technics sl-m3 Linear TT that uses P-mount cartridges. If I buy the Digitrac 200 catridge/stylus and figure the cartridge is DOA, then what cartridge do I get that is a P-mount?

IIRC there were some photos here on AK where someone modified one of the Ortofon p-mounts to take a Digitrac stylus. They removed a good amount of plastic from the cart body to make it work.

I've bought four of the Digitracs from Jett Sales, and three were working cartridges, and the other became a stylus donor for my SuperOM body. There's a good chance the Digitrac cartridge will work.
