What albums do you think are overrated?

I ran across a used CD the other day at the thrift store, King Crimson's "In The Court of The Crimson King", and was able to sample the tracks on a CD player in the store, and frankly, I just don't get what is so great about it. I found the music mediocre and somewhat over orchestrated.

Everyone has their own idea of what is overrated. I love In the Court of the Crimson King. It also has one of the greatest cover illustrations ever put on a record.

I have a hard time deciding when an album is overrated. I have groups I don't mesh with but plenty of other people love them. U2, Oasis and Coldplay are of no interest to me but they have a ton of fans. To each his own.

So, in summary, you "sampled the tracks" on a thrift store system, and "found the music mediocre and somewhat over orchestrated"? How so? You didn't even listen to a single track from start to finish. I don't suppose you did "get it".
 
Just about any band/group/artist is over rated in some sense: none are perfect (especially as people) and most have many poor albums/tracks/compositions. Of course, some rabid fans will never acknowledge this, or even have the capacity to be cognizant of it.

There is no Orchestra on this recording,it's a Mellotron. Listen to Epitaph off that album or drop LSD and listen to Moonchild. When that recording came on to the scene it was revolutionary.

Anything by Prince.

I have a pretty open mind to all kinds of music - I really try. I just don't get the guy or find any appreciation to his music. IMVHO his purpleness is way over rated.

Oh and hey - my 2400th post ..... not that I'm counting :D
 
"Dark Side of the Moon"

Maybe I'm just numb of it, but I don't think I've played it 2x in 10 years, which is better than "The Wall" which I actually listened to all the way through for the first time EVER 2 years ago.

It was fun in college, but now it just doesn't do much for me.

We have similar tastes...actually, distastes. And as you say, to each his own.

I never try to talk anyone into thinking a particular artist or particular album is good or bad. There are many very popular ones that I don't care for....but I'm not sure this means they are over-hyped....they're just not for me. On the other hand, there are many albums out there that don't get nearly enough attention, at least from my perspective.

Peter Framton - Comes Alive. I heard this the week it was released. I thought is was awful then and still do to this day. Hokey nonsense with lame guitar work.

Wow, Billy's probably one of the greatest song writers of the 20th Century. To stir the pot even more here's my overrated choices:

Rolling Stones (took forever to create an album without covers)

Janice Joplin (sounds like a naggy wife)

The Doors (just cannot stand organ based rock)
 
No "boss" for me either. That voice and over-blown saxophone is really grating to my ears. Sorry to all who dig the I'm a regular working stiff guy lyrics. What tripe.
 
not into Bruce or Billy. I find Bruce songs laughable. I just don't connect with it. Same with BJ. Maybe it's an east coast thing. I do like San Fran sound, and more mid west song writers.
 
Not so much a particular album, but I never got Captain Beefheart. I understand and appreciate he has very devoted fans and the Magic Band HAD to be very talented musicians to play those songs with the ever changing rhythms. But just not my thing.

Strangely, totally into Zappa, Even love Hot Rats, which featured Capt Beefheart on some tracks.
