Overrated Albums

I had the hardest time getting into Captain Beefheart myself. Initially I heard Trout Mask Replica and Lick My Decals Off Baby and thought it was just a dude playing weirdly choreographed music for the sake of playing weirdly choreographed music.

Then I heard Safe as Milk and I absolutely loved it. I'm not going to call it a straight forward psych album because Captain Beefheart is anything but straight forward, but I found it to be much more palatable then the more irreverent stuff he did later. It's worth a shot if you haven't already given it a listen, Sho Nuff and Yes I do is a great opening track.

I agree with some of the others posts (basically everything DJ-GMan said, though I respect Tom Petty).

My biggest one is Phish. I grew up mostly into old punk like the Ramones and Dead Boys, stuff like that, and most of my buddies were neo-hippie jam band fanatics and played Phish like crazy. I just really found it to be very boring for the most part, yeah they're great musicians, but they just never grabbed me. "Oh cool, they all play each others instruments. Oh cool, they picked up on a song they played three seconds of yesterday on the second day of their weekend festival. Oh cool, they covered a rap song but made it a jam band song". It's not to say I don't like great musicians, or dudes that can jam, or anything like that. I think it's that Phish just bores the hell out of me and I don't understand how they have such a rabid fan base.
 
If you want to hear a good Beef heart album, try Spotlight Kid. It has a futuristic Howling Wolf style to it.

Green Day (wouldn't know what punk is if it bit 'em on the arse)

The Grateful Dead (I guess one had to 'be there' at the time)

maybe in '77. but since, pretty boring to me. my wife likes him. the other day one of his newer songs came on the playlist and after it was over some '06/'07 MMJ came on. wow, did they ever make him sound flat and uninteresting.

some of that hype is the fault of reviewers trying one-up each other for eye-balls. It's very good overall, with some brilliant flashes. That's how I would put it.
 
OK Computer is just so musically complex. I hesitate to say it, but I think the progressions in Paranoid Android might actually be wholly original. If someone can name another song that uses those progressions (including accidentals and inversions) I'd be surprised. That record opened so many doors musically. At the time it really was one-of-a-kind.

I enjoy some early Police; and Oasis has some good rockin' tunes, I know his voice throws a lot of people off-- as for Beatles comparison, I don't see it.
 
Elvis Costello. Can't stand him. Maybe this is why...

The OP said "Overrated" and to me, this doesn't live up to the amazing hype.

Bruce Springsteen - I've tried. Just can't get into his boogie numbers, tho he has many singular tunes I dig.

As for Captain Beefheart, he's an acquired taste. Spin "Observatory Crest" to see how beautiful his music can be.

And anyone who doesn't understand what a revelation "Pet Sounds" was, I can't understand. If you don't like it, that's fine, but that album was a turning point in modern recording, tho that may be a different thread topic.

As for Metallica, they had 3 great albums and one stupendous ep, and then it went to chit. IN. My. Opinion.
 
almost all Beatles albums are overrated imho , this does not mean they are not good just not as good as the massive hype would lead you to believe .

however Rubber Soul & Revolver would still make my top 100 just not in the top 50.

but you know opinions are like A$$ holes everyone has one
