Overrated Albums

I agree about the boss except for Nebraska. Also agree about billy Joel and Frampton. I hesitatingly agree about Sgt Peppers in that it's not my favorite Beatles album. Still a great record but not the GOAT. I'd put abbey road, revolver and let it be ahead of it. I listen to those more often at any rate.

I also think Nirvana Nevermind is overated. In Utero is significantly better. As are many of the records and bands that inspired Kurt. Pixies, Sonic Youth, Melvin's, etc...

Maybe an underrated thread would be fun.
 
I disagree with the OP's choice. In the Court of King Crimson helped ignite the psychedelic rock genre. The re-master by Steven Wilson is as good as it gets.

I do think Radiohead's OK Computer album is overrated. I do like it, but I don't think it lives up to all the rave reviews and hype it received.

I think that album is so, so good. I think you need to think about it's context, the musicians on the album and their prowess. Times are different and I can understand your reaction. Even when it was released it wasn't for everyone. Maybe give it another try in LP format on the home stereo system and see what that sounds like to you. It's great music and was the precursor to lots of talented spin-off groups and incredible prog music.
 
Every single album and artist mentioned in this thread deserve their accolades.

Of course we all have tastes and opinions, but I can point out songs, melodies and lyrics in all the examples that make them awesome in one way or another. I really don't think the greats become great totally by accident. Especially these ( i.e. musicians with longstanding careers that have stood the test of time and generally write their own material)

Unfortunately at this point , technology is a crutch for some of the pop acts so this trend may come to an abrupt halt.

A lot of so-called "rare Psych" LPs of the '60s-circa 1975 are rather ho-hum, IMO. There are exceptions, and tremendouse ones @ that, but many (many) disappointments among the lot.
 
To me, to be considered "Overrated" would mean something universally considered untouchable, that I don't really care for.

My candidates would be the "White Album" (really everything by the Beatles EXCEPT "Abbey Road").

And then there's "Pet Sounds"........
 
For me to single out a record would be presumptuous and probably hurt someone's feelings.
 
Yup, just like bungholes, everybody's got their 'overrateds'. Here's mine:

Bruce Springsteen (I loved it when he crossed a picket line in Tacoma........)
Tom Petty (Dylan wannabe)
The Police, and most definitely, Sting (don't even get me started)
Pearl Jam (if you want real grunge, listen to Mudhoney)
Dave Matthews (lame as lame gets)
John Mayer (can't write a song - yes, he can play, but I can't stand watching him do so)
Eric Clapton (can play too, but after Cream and Derek, forget it)
Foo Fighters (sorry, Dave, but you can't come even close to your previous band)
Oasis (when a band gets compared to the Beatles, I just have to laugh)
Green Day (wouldn't know what punk is if it bit 'em on the arse)
The Grateful Dead (I guess one had to 'be there' at the time)

I got a few more, but I just can't think of them right now.......

Actually I could half agree, as I only think half of it is great!
 
To be overrated, that must mean a lot of people were ga-ga over it. And I guess "critics" hailed it as special. A lot of the responses definitely fall into that group, big sellers but not sure why.
I know Ken is gonna bitch-slap me but anything after and including "Black and Blue" was some weak stuff. Their early music was as good as it gets, even when they weren't really that good at playing. They were cool for attempting to be a blues band, soul band, rockabilly band, not pulling it off but having a damn good time working at it. By the mid-late 60's they were writing and performing at a level unequaled by any rock band since.

I listened to the beginning of each track and then various portions within each track to see if there was anything I liked. IMO, the album is overrated.

But, everyone has their opinion of what is or isn't good, and everyone's opinion is just as valid.

I was just curious to see if anyone else felt the same way about this or other albums considered classics.

As for the thrift store system, it's irrelevant as far as determining whether or not you like the music. However, once you find something you like, that's when you want to listen on a good system.
 
I really wish I liked these, I've really tried. :tears:

Rolling Stones-Sticky Fingers I do like some songs but overall it leaves me cold and I keep trying it multiple times.
Public Enemy-It takes a Nation of Millions to Hold us Back......noise. I like their next album better.
Pet Sounds-Failed to live up to expectations on the must have list.
My Bloody Valentine-Loveless. Couple of good ones but most of the album is overdone distortion.
The Pixies-Surfer Rosa. Love the Pixies, this one just doesn't gel for some reason.
Anything by Elvis Costello......I WISH I could like him because like Knopfler he's done the whole back to roots deal, even appearing on A Prairie Home Companion. I just can't past his voice.
