Overrated Albums

Good writeup, Ken.

I'm having my ears assaulted by this older gent in our office who sits by my desk and will talk for HOURS ON END.

He's clocking in today at about 45 minutes of discussing his grandmother's squash, how he loved German Chawwcolate Cake (how he pronounces chocolate) and now is pontificating about Velveeta cheese. Food is his topic du jour.

I haven't replied in 45 minutes. This is my day at work.

Cheer up, new toys coming.

I notice some great iconic artists and albums in this thread, lots of joyless opinionating but then I never 'got' James Brown, David Gates, or a number of others that brought joy to folks. Gangsta' and most hyphenated metal doesn't play here either, just can't get into it.
Otherwise, is this going to be another "it sux cuz I don't like it" music thread?

I could do without the orchestral arrangements on that album. I actually prefer the album that preceded it, "After the Goldrush." One of my favorites of his.

Oh yes, I cannot wait! Woke up this morning with a Dynaco smile on my face.

As for James Brown, I can understand some being put off by his singing and histrionics, but lord, any band he led was ****-hot.

As for this thread, let's try and remember, "What albums are overrated?" is essentially an opinion-based thread. Let's just hear each other out, and have a laugh, see another point of view.

I believe the orchestral arrangement, much like that in "Modern Sounds In Country Western Music" by Ray Charles, takes away from the music instead of adding. Yuck.

Nah, overrated, to me anyways, doesn't mean it's bad, it just means I don't put it on a pedestal of rock history as general consensus has. A good overrated list should be a bit contentious for that reason.

James Brown though?? Underrated in my book...

See, that's it. I actually LIKE Radiohead, but I'm still trying to see what all the fuss is about. All the pontificating by critics make you think that Thom Yorke will leap out of your stereo, do your dishes, walk your dog, and make your bed.

Good post, and in keeping with this thread, let's see if we can make a case for albums that are good, but not THAT good.

Radiohead will always be one of my all-time top bands. Do yourself a favor: Put on Kid A, in its entirety, sit back, and do nothing but listen.

I am also a little biased, as I've seen them live a few times. Just imagine sitting at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, Radiohead on stage and fog rolling in right over the stage as they're playing "How to Disappear Completely"

I have a pretty open mind to all kinds of music - I really try. I just don't get the guy or find any appreciation to his music. IMVHO his purpleness is way over rated.

Oh and hey - my 2400th post ..... not that I'm counting

IMO mainly just Purple Rain and all after it are overrated.

JB underrated?
Probably yes from the cred the movie gives him for his influence. My head is too into the classic western music form to lose the architecture of melody and theme-and-development progression.

In college I used Kid A as a soundtrack to 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Maybe it was the alcohol, but it was pretty mind blowing at the time.

To paraphrase Chuck Klosterman, the Black Crowes are perfectly rated. Stoned people love 'em. Drunk people think they are OK, and everyone else could not care less.
