P-Mount Cart Recommendations for Techncs SLJ2

When I was in quarantine I acquired a Technics SLJ2 Linear Tracking Turntable from a guy a few miles out, it was fully serviced, new belt, newly lubed etc, Even has a new needle on what appears to be its stock P=Mount technics cart.

I am looking for a bit of an upgrade.

First let me say I love the way this thing performs and tracks. However, I do believe it may be time to start considering a P-mount cart upgrade.

Long story short, I listen to a lot of Metal, Jazz, Funk, New Wave and both Vocal and Instrumental stuff.

My first question is, will only certain P-mounts be suitable, is there a reference range or is any and all P-mounts suitable for the arm on this table?

Second question is, what's a good P-mount in the $75-100 range that has full body and sound scape on vocal, bass and a decent pull of all sounds in between these frequency ranges?

Do you know what cart you currently have? I went 100% p-mount a long time ago, and have a LOT of p-mount carts and various styli for them so I can probably give you a good idea of what's what anyway. The type of music you listen to plays a part here too!

If you can pick up a newer style AT cart for this (you can usually find them pretty cheap), this stylus is a sleeper. Not overly 'bright' either, but a decent (I believe) AT-made stylus that won't fatigue the ears or break the bank (and it'll keep you under $100 for everything easily.

Hey, I believe it is the stock Cart with a Transparent Yellow design, a technics model I believe designed specifically for Linear trackers.

Check my first post for the kinda music I listen to, its a variety.

If I am understanding you correctly you're saying that's the stylus upgrade for the AT92E?

I could be wrong, but it is probably a sideways move for the AT92E's original stylus. It is one of the upgrades available for the AT3482P, which is the same cartridge with a different stylus.
 
If Technics' pattern for stock cartridges in their linear tracker models was the same worldwide back in the day, then the stock cartridge that came with the SL-J2 is the EPC 30, with an EPS 30ES elliptical stylus. I have one with the original stylus and it's an excelent sounding cart. Finding a good replacement is something I haven't achieved yet, thou. The only one I tried was the Thakker EPS 30 ES, but the original is way better, of course. As I was using it on an SL 10, I was able to increase the tracking force by 0.25g, and that's when the stylus started sounding decent to my ears. And, true, aftermarket stylus makers do not seem concerned about providing a replacement stylus with the same weight and cantilever dimensions as the original ones, which is a shame.

Big issues. T4p mount is down to 2 manufacturers (and might even be down to one). There's a few Audio-Technica models and Grado models. This is the only two makes who still currently offer them.
 
By the way guys, I have an ortofon tm 14 laying around which I popped of an SL-7 that didn't work out.

Thoughts on this cart with a replacement needle? Not even sure the condition of it now.

Because, someone linked me to it above and recommended it to me for this table since t's a P-mount.I am talking about what about it as a P mount?
 
Any thoughts on the ortofon tm 14? I have one laying about, I just remembered that. It was pulled off a SL-7 that had a Pulley damage.

TM14 was the vanilla Ortofon cart that came with many Technics linears. They're OK. Not really an upgrade in my opinion, a little more detail, a little less body.

FWIW I went through this same dance about 10 years ago. On the previous page someone mentioned the LPGear vividline and I emphatically agree with that recommendation. I like my AT311 with vividline upgrade so much I adapted it to my newer Fluance table. In my opinion it sounds better than the Orto Blue I auditioned (and far better the red). I can dig up the exact link for you. It'll be just slightly above your budget range, but I can tell you it's worth it.

They also have just the stylus for most any AT-style cart alone for about $115.
For the price I've found this stylus can't be beat. That's my opinion - I've tried to change it (that opinion) a few time in the past 8 or so years I've been running these, but it hasn't happened yet. :)

If I were the OP and could spend the money, that's the way I'd probably go. Saves mixing and matching cartridges and styli, too.
 
Here's a possibility with room to grow. Just came across an AT311 on the big auction place. Same that my vividline is mounted on. This cart is great stock overall and was a huge favorite of many in the AT lineup - was discontinued about 5 or so years ago give or take. Very full-bodied sound (even though many ATs are known for that in general) compared to the newer versions largely because of its higher output voltage. Great cart.
