Peavey SP-1 speaker question

I may have the chance soon to get four horns from some Peavey SP-1 speakers. Are the horns any good to use in a speaker project?

What size driver do these take?

The SP-1 speakers I may have access to must be an early version as the horns mount using 8 screws and the bass horn portion doesn't have the horizontal pieces in the horn.
 
The screws are along the outer edge of the bells? I think that's normal. But, the missing horizontal slats in the bin would suggest early to me too.

They take a "1 inch" threaded driver which doesn't give you a true 1 inch throat. IMO, it's best to use these with a good screw on driver rather than a bolt on driver with adapter. There's nothing wrong with the 22A that was originally on them if you can get a good pair that hasn't been abused or a dead pair and new phragms for them. The 22A is very similar to the Eminence PSD2002. FWIW, i give the edge to the Peavey driver.
 
The screws are not in the configuration shown in the pics in that link that was posted. There are two on each side of the horn and they are in the very edge of the horn mouth. I have no clue of the condition of the drivers as the speakers I think suffer from either an open resistor in the crossover or the bi amp 1/4" jack for the horn is bad which is pretty common for these speakers from what I have read.

OK, sounding really early then.

If they still have 22A drivers, replacement phragms are still available and surprisingly reasonable in price if that is the issue. Real early 22A's are square, and cool because they're.................... well, square.
 
FWIW, the bass bin is very similar to LaScala's bass section. Being that these are pre Black Widow, they may very likely have an Eminence woofer that is not much different than the woofer used in LaScala of that vintage. I've heard of fellas doing the same mod on these as they do with LaScala by adding volume and ports on the bottom of the cabinet.
 
Cool. If I had space I would be tempted to get the whole speakers. The place that has them had 8 but replaced three with newer Peavey speakers. They are used in conjunction with four JBL-4520 bass horns.
 
Thinking about it I might just get the whole speakers. I can prob get 5 for sure don't know about the other three. The horns in all don't work and they will need the crossovers redone. If they want money for them how much should i offer?
 
In questionable operating condition and not knowing what's inside, maybe 50 each, 75 tops. The cabinets and horns are worth that, and any proper working parts will be bonus. A fella that likes to mess around with speakers could have a lot of fun with that lot.

Thanks. I do know that these speakers could suffer from the cap across the woofer being shorted, a resistor in the crossover burning out, the compression driver being blown or the 1/4" bi amp jacks being bad.

Those speakers would be fun to mess around with.

SP1 uses a CH-1 horn which is a biradial CD designed after the EV HR9040 designed by Don Keele. The bass section Is a better built version of a La Scalla horn and if you don't have braces you should install some. The CH-1 horn is a very good sounding horn I am running a st mounted vertically on a pair of Klipsch KLF20 bins with CF3 crossovers. Sounds very good. These are good speakers for very cheap. You will want to replace the electrolytic caps in the xove as they are well over thirty years old. have fun. Best regards Moray James.
 
I am not sure about later models but early SP1 like the pair I have do not have horizontal braces on the bass horns, the same vintage FH-1 does have braces on the dog house. Easy enough to install one or more sets of braces after the fact.
I just ordered a pair of factory titanium diaphragms for all of $82.00 the pair shipping included. I have two sets of 22A one set round one set square magnets. I agree with you that the square versions do look cool and there may even be a little more magnet there which can't be bad. this is a very cool.
Do you have any images of the early SP1 you mentioned? I have not seen any in my searches. Best regards Moray James.
 
The OP had posted a pic in post #6, but it's been removed, i'll try to find another.

I can't copy the pic i've found, but it looks like the early horns might have been actual HR9040's painted black.

Had all the Peavey SP Series at one time or another and new to boot....long gone now:)
